Bad Effects Of Plastic Surgery Knowledge Base

What are the long term effects of plastic surgery? Someone told me that if you have plastic surgery that ideally 10-20yrs later scar tissue builds up around the area you had plastic surgery and your skin will sag. They said that your skin grafts to a certain structure and that overtime there is an excess of scar tissue which makes you look weird. Is that true? What are the long term bad effects of plastic surgery? Are they common? At what rate do they occur? Well I do realize that as you grow older it's only natural for your skin to sag but I was told plastic surgery greatly magnifies the effects of aging. Does plastic surgery make it so your skin would look unnatural even for an old person? The person who told me this said you would look like a clown after 20yrs and even if you just got a nose job you would have to return to the surgeon to get your skin "tightened up" because it would be a lot looser that the average old person's skin is. Is this true?
Why is plastic surgery risky? And why? If you can, please do at least one: How plastic surgery effects society. Why does it effect society? Some true stories, if possible. The highly costs of plastic surgery. Did you have plastic surgery? If so, how was the the result? Good or bad? Plastic surgery good or bad? Thanks!! Any of these would be greatly appreciated. :D
What are some advantages of Plastic Surgery? my debating team at school is on the negative side of the debate. The topic is "Plastic surgery should be prohibited". we know that the other team will go on about the dangers of plastic surgery and other bad effects (like michael jackson lol) so we need at least 4 different topics to do with the advantages of plastic surgery

Could you check my grammar errors and make them correct? Could you check my grammar errors and make them correct? Once people had plastic surgery, people addicted to the plastic surgery. Whether procedures have succeeded or failed, people want to do plastic surgery again. People, who succeeded plastic surgery, will find another drawback that needs a plastic surgery from their body. People, who failed plastic surgery, will do plastic surgery to fix their failed part again. Therefore, it will cause that have problems with their health condition. It will obtain extra health problem from the plastic surgery. Any surgery is potentially dangerous, including plastic surgery. It happened rare, but it sometimes leads to many serious problems, even death, because of a bad reaction to have plastic surgery. That is, if accident happened because of plastic surgery, people are not only pain their body but also lose their jobs, confidence and, even, their lives. Although people see lots of news about side effects of plastic surgery, they still want to do it. Why they decide to do plastic surgery even they accept that danger? First, people who undergo the plastic surgery could have lots of opportunities. For example, if you are more beautiful and handsome by plastic surgery, when you have a job interview, you could give a good impression to interviewer. If there are applicants who have a same ability, the interviewer will choose you as a new employee, and vice versa. Also, there are opportunities to choose your future spouse, too.
Can you get plastic surgery for free if they think your psycgologically in danger of hurting yourself? I hate my nose so much it effects everything I do walking in the hallways us difficult for me because I think everyone thinks I'm hideous I don't make eye contact n when n I walk into class I look to the direction opposite everyone else so they won't see my face when I'm sitting in class doing my work I almost always cover my face with my hand I feel so disgusting but I don't have the money to pay for plastic surgery I feel so bad sometimes that I think about having "accidents" so I can get surgery done on it please help

The increase in plastic surgery procedures is having a negative effect on American Society.(3 reasons why?)? I need to write a persuasive essay and I need three reasons why it's bad. I've heard of self-mutilation, but that's pretty much it.
What is your opinion on plastic surgery? Do you support it? Do you strongly oppose it? I know if I saw this question a year ago, I would be furious and go on and on about how everyone is entitled to change themselves however they want. But now, I see what effect it has on people's lives. People get addicted to plastic surgery, or something goes wrong. For example, [not trying to sound obsessed] Michael Jackson. One of his surgeries went terrible wrong and caused a chain of problems. I admire the guy for everything except getting the surgeries, because he would be a lot better appearance-wise and personality wise...I won't continue to go on about Michael, but I just wanna know who out there thinks plastic surgery is good or bad, and why. No harsh answers if you disagree with me please. Personally, now I strongly believe in loving yourself for who you are. I even think plastic surgery should be outlawed.
Nose Job/Rhinoplasty? I know the side effects to plastic surgery are bad and most people are better of naturally than with the enhancements of a cosmetic procedure, but I've never heard this said about nose reconstruction. I've heard the real facts that can go wrong with breast augmentations, botox fillings, nips and tucks, but what about nose jobs? Sometimes I want to get one when I'm out of school and have a stable job and the money for it, because my nose is slightly crooked if you pay close attention to it from the side views, but it looks straight from the front...if that makes sense? That's the only problem I get annoyed with about myself to a serious level, I don't want to get a boob job or get botox for wrinkles regardless of how my chest looks or how my face ages, I can deal with that and don't have a problem with it, it's just my nose that irks me. But that's all I want to alter about myself, however as I research rhinoplasty the worst I hear is about it is the pain, discomfort, and bruising that lasts a couple weeks but fades away. And of course that your nose can come out worse than before if you really get its shape changed into something entirely different, but I'm not drastically wanting to change it. So are there some really bad things about nose jobs that I haven't heard? Because if there are, its not worth it to me and I won't want to do it in the future anymore. What do you guys think? =] @Libraryanna: That's true most people probably don't see it but I'd want to do this for myself, like my own satisfaction not because of what people would say. It just bugs me that my nose's bridge is slightly crooked when it could so easily be straightened out. But its only my nose, like my breasts aren't average they're kind of small actually and my friends sometimes tease me, but I'm fine with them I don't ever want to have silicone inside them and I don't care if they "drop" when I'm old lolz. I'll check out your link though. =]
What should I do about Plastic Surgery? Ok some of you are probably going to think I am crazy and need to seek help right away but anyways. So ever since I was like 14 I have been obsessed with how big my nose is. My dad had a huge nose and now I am stuck with the same thing, and I have wanted to get a nose job ever since. A few people have commented on how big my nose is and it hurts so bad. A few months after I discovered my nose was too big I realized that I have a huge forehead. My dad had a huge forehead too, and one person had mentioned that I have a big forehead. So ever since that I have wanted to get hairline lowering surgery. I am 18 now and I am eligible to get these surgeries, but ever since those 2 I have also wanted to get 2 of my moles removed and now I want surgery to close up my lip ring hole. I believed that after I got all of these surgeries I would my truly happy in life and would have the greatest confidence ever. My parents think I'm over obsessive and believe that life is not all about how you look. I know this is right but I cant help to think of how wonderful life would be if i fixed my insecurities. But just 2 days ago I decided that I want another surgery. So now i'm sitting here thinking am i nuts? am I just an addict? I don't know what to do anymore. Should I just get the surgeries and risk side-effects , or just be happy with myself, or see a psychiatrist? HELP.
Long term health effects from inhalation of plastic and aluminum fumes while smoking pot? When I was 15-16 (I'm 18 now), my friends and I used to smoke pot out of a bong made of a plastic water bottle, an empty plastic pen shaft for the pipe, and aluminum foil wrapped around the pen as a bowl. The plastic around the tip of the pen melted slightly on several occasions (the most recent, after which we stopped doing this, caused the pen to bend). About 6 months ago, maybe 6-12 months after I stopped smoking altogether, I had a lung collapse. The doctors say this happens spontaneously in tall thin males, so isn't necessarily tied to this (I haven't mentioned this). It's six months since the surgery and I'm still having pains. . .kinda embarassed to admit I did something this stupid to my doctor or surgeon. Will my health be OK even though I made some bad choices? I used the aforementioned device between 0-3 times a week for maybe two years, was never a heavy drug user. I'm supposed to go up to college soon and don't really want to die or anything..dr apt tomorrow, should I ask?
Girls - which of these plastic surgery procedures should I opt for? I'm a girl (22) whose always been very unhappy about my appearance. I am not being under-confident, I am just generally facially ugly. It is not just one thing, but an accumulation. My nose is too big (and knobbly and ski-jump shaped), my cheekbones sallow, and my chin very weak. It has had a MASSIVE effect on my confidence, and I dearly want to do something about it. I am ashamed to go out, have never had a boyfriend and have always been picked on about being ugly. I have saved up enough money for some plastic surgery. The situation really is that bad that I feel I have no alternative. However, I can only afford two of the three operations I have mentioned (nose, cheeks, chin). I will have the third one later. I would like to ask people which two of the three would be the most important to start with (i.e. which two of the three would produce the most pronounced effect). One of the three absolutely MUST be my nose because that is by far the worst bit. Thanks very, very much in advance
i like to do a plastic surgery (only white )? how much tho cost of it... not modified .. only for all over my face and body white all and what are the effect... sorry my bad english..

I NEED HELP WITH AN ESSAY please? ok so i have to write an essay on: are todays famous people good role models for young people so this is wat i have can anyone help me edit it and use proper grammer Today’s famous people are not a good role model for young people because there doing inappropriate things like plastic surgery, bad relationship, and are on too many bad diets. Young people should look up to people like Raven Simon, Oprah Winfrey, and Barrack Obama. On of the most terrible thing that celebrities do now days is plastic surgery. People like Ashley Simpson, Mickey Rourke, Michael Jackson, Pamela Anderson, and Jessica Simpson have done much plastic surgery and now they look unappealing. Plastic surgery make people look fake, unnatural and make them lose there respect. Plastic surgery has some side effects like disfigurement, illness, infection, and birth defect. This is why it’s not good to do them. Many famous people are obsessed with plastic surgery so they are considered as a bad role model. Bad relationship is another big thing today. Famous people like to have boy/girl friends but they are not too smart about there decisions. They often make mistake and choose people who are rich and good looking. Most famous people are abusive, sexual, and are not honest. Some example of bad relationship would be Pamela Anderson /Tommy Lee, Charlie Sheen/Denise Richards, and Rihanna /Chris brown. Bad diets are another big thing today with famous people. Diets like Jenny Craig, Herbal Magic system, my fit, and fit for life often has side effect like gaining weight, gas, throwing up, and stomach ache. It is better not to take these diets. To maintain a healthy fit body its better to eat healthy and exercise. Most celebrities often starve them self and end up with a bad illness. Young people should look up to teachers and family members as their role models. So as you can see famous people are not a good role model for young people because they do plastic surgery, have bad relationship, and are on too many bad diets
Hollywood "projecting" a bad image to children? LOL, I call BS? it's the people that worship that fake celebrities projecting the image. Seriously, my niece is starving herself, and she asked me to buy her blue contact lenses. She's a blonde and she died her hair. She has nice, thin fair eyebrows and not only did she SHAVE them off, she re-drew them black. I asked her what's up with the whole emo look, she told me was trying to look like Megan Fox because HER FATHER was telling her how beautiful Megan Fox was, and that made her think she was ugly, HER OWN FATHER made her think this! So my question is: how can people say Hollywood is such a bad effect on children? It was never a problem for me, (maybe because I've been a size 0 my whole life..idk) but it's actually the people around me. Note: EVERYTHING about Megan Fox is absolutely fake. Name an attractive feature of her. Chances are, it's fake. Her nose, eyebrows(it was a uni-brow, extremely thick. Google it) body, boobs, and even HER EYE COLOR, THE MOST ATTRACTIVE THING ABOUT HER! is fake. I told my niece this and thank God she's changed her mind..her role model is Selena Gomez now (better that sl*tty Miley Cyrus or Megan Faux) and I exercise with her regularly, in substitute of her STARVING herself. (WTF!) I'm sorry, yes I'm very angry because I felt bad for my poor 13 year old niece! She's over weight and is already having problems about herself..having a fake person idolized wasn't helping her. Please note I am not jealous. Megan Fox is very, very beautiful. But in all honesty, I can be as attractive or even more attractive if I have what she have--plastic surgery all over. So, that fact doesn't hurt me none. BTW I'm actually bisexual, so if she ever came on to me.. ;D So it's win-win.
Where can I get free plastic surgery? Are you a surgent or student who would operate on me probono? I'm sadSOS When I was 14-15years of age I was diagnosed after many prior subsequent psychosomatic symptoms and tested in the city and put on ritalin as tests confirmed ADHD. The ritalin increased my anxiety so I was sent to a particular psychiartrist who began treating me at 50kg, kept giving out higher dosages of zoloft until we reach the max legal dose, he then put me on lithium I never received therapy that is meant to compliment the drugs he put me on, he watched me worsen and soon had me on zoloft, ritalin, valium, lithium and when I went psychotic from all these cocktails of mediation he placed me on seroquel. I saw him and trusted him for 5 years during this time i became worse than ever, within 2 years doubled my weight so I was up around the 100kg mark from a normal 50kg I am 1.53cm tall. On all the meds my self harm continued and I didnt eat but just drank coke so dont know how I put on weight, I guess all the meds I was on had side effects of weight gain, stopped meds anorexic loseskin
Side Effects of 2007 Head Injury? I had a head injury in 2007. I was hit in the forehead with a skateboard, which sliced vertically through my skin. I could not feel the pain, but my skull was exposed and I was bleeding profusely. When I got to the hospital, I had to have plastic surgery to minimize the appearance of the scar. The doctors said that I was obviously in shock, and that I had a concussion. Ever since, I have had side-splitting headaches which sometimes cause me to sweat. These headaches only last a few seconds, about 5-10. I have been having back and neck problems. What I am wondering is: What are the long term side effects? Since I am almost 15 and my injury happened when I was almost 13, when I am an adult will some things (like my headaches) stop? Or will I get even more side effects, and will my side effects get worse? I have had a lot of anger problems which happened immediately after my injury.

If drugs/alcohol abuse damages your health how come the celebrities who succumb still look so good? I want to know how, if these toxic substances are so bad for us, many prominent celebrities who have succumbed to addiction still look so good, in terms of their physical appearance, after kicking the habit. Most of them tend to look awful from too much plastic surgery rather than too much drug abuse, and what about the effects on their body don't they suffer from all kinds of physical ailments after so many toxins going into their body ?

How many minutes do you think this persuasive speech would consume? Nowadays, plastic surgery makeovers have become quite rampant. The basic aim of this surgery is to enhance the appearance of the individual by altering the parts of the body. On the other hand, not everybody feels the same way, as do I. We believe and know that plastic surgery involves risks and side effects which in some cases, we could regret for the rest of our lives. So, are plastic surgery makeovers good or bad? They say that, plastic surgery can alleviate mental illnesses. Some people are so consumed with their appearance that they let it affect their mental health like being anorexic and having body dismorphia. Since we have these surgeons who can instantly change or remove what these people do not like about their bodies, then why don’t they just do it? Primarily because, this is not solving the problem at general. The problem is that the perception the mind has on what’s important. All plastic surgery is doing is changing the appearance but not the mental state. Plastic surgery only masks the inner problem. What these types of people really need is psychological help. Now, it was stated under the Human Rights Act written on the Philippine Constitution, Article 13 that we have the right to express ourselves. If we can dye our hair, change our clothes and have piercings, then why shouldn't’t we be able to express ourselves via plastic surgery? Well you should know that it is laughable to think that having larger breasts or lips can be classified as the use of ‘freedom of expression’. How low has our society gone if we think that the most valuable use of our right to freedom of expression is the right to have plastic surgery and dye our hair? The availability of plastic surgery only lets the idea that it is acceptable to want physical perfection, and that appearance is the most important. When they first used plastic surgery, it was to help individuals by covering up fire burns or correcting an abnormal feature. This was how plastic surgery was first used. Then, people started to abuse plastic surgery by attaining physical perfection. They wanted to look like those Airbrushed models on the magazine covers. But nowadays, they actually use plastic surgery to look abnormal by wanting to look like animals or add weird parts to their body. What was once medical and good is now nothing more than a freaky side show. Now my dear friends, the choice is yours. You might agree with me or you could still choose to disagree. But remember, are those minimal benefits worth the trouble? Is it really worth risking your life for a beautiful face that would someday still deteriorate? I know you’d make the right choice. Say no to plastic surgery makeovers. >> I really need it to be like exactly 2 minutes, so if it's not then what could I remove that is not that important?
What did you think of The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor? Having been a huge fan of the first two Mummy films, I was again expecting another thrill ride from Universal as the lights dimmed - but that expectation soon turned to dread as I watched this iconic franchise descend into an absolute mediocre disaster! How Brendan Fraser ever agreed to even appear in this third instalment is beyond me and the slight fact that there are actually no mummies in this film only paves the way for its critical mauling! You see, a Mummy is an ancient Egyptian King buried in a Golden Sarcophagus who has the arguable honour of having his brain wrenched from his skull through his nostrils. He is not a former Chinese Emperor who was turned to dust over a thousand years ago by an immortal Witch! This time round, its China's turn to host a doomsday Mummy-fest - why not? It's hosting the Olympics and after all, downtown Shanghai is stereotypical Mummy territory right? Wrong, and director Rob Cohen's first stab at the Mummy franchise has this word daubed all over the screen in bold, red ink, even more so if you're a fan of the first two films. Here, the effects still live up but the whole aspect of character development seems to have been swept to the sidelines in favour of appalling jokes and Chinese fireworks. The relationship between Fraser and newcomer, Maria Bello is laughable to say the least and the only time anyone pauses for breath is to shoot or blow something up! The film also suffers badly from inaccuracies. In the second film, archaeologist Rick O'Connell (Fraser) and Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) were married and had an eight-year-old son, Alex. But now, just seven years later, Alex has suddenly become a twenty something-year-old Mummy basher! Also, does any one else find the inclusion of Mountain Yetis, or Abominable Snowmen in a Mummy film simply hilarious??? Both Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh are indeed welcome additions to the franchise and thank God they're here - at least Yeoh's character is believable and her brilliantly choreographed final battle with Li is visually stunning. Yeoh is also immortal in the film, well, any woman who has a two thousand-year-old daughter who looks about ten would have to be, unless the Chinese know something about Plastic Surgery us Westerners don't. Whoever cast American actress Maria Bello for the role of Evelyn O'Connell, the posh, sexy, kick-*** British Egyptologist, formerly played by Rachel Weisz, should be shot! I found it remarkable that Hollywood had the cheek to replace Weisz, a fantastic actress who was a thrill from start to finish in the first two films. No doubt Bello is convincing when playing the right parts, but here, she just doesn't seem to find her comfort zone in Weisz's shoes, sporting an absolutely diabolic British accent which at times sound like a cross between Australian and Irish. Perhaps Bello's slick dagger twirling and shooting skills are enough to make the audience not wish to see her get eaten by the Yetis and her revealing night gowns certainly add a sense of brief eye candy for male audience members. But Weisz's absence is still severely felt…and missed. The film is hit with yet more bullet wounds in the form of its awful "humour" and desperately unfunny one liners, all of which sink like lead balloons. Take Evelyn's brother, Johnathan (John Hannah), who to be fair was hilarious in the first two films but here, tries to squeeze every last drop out of his disastrous dialogue by pulling strange faces and constantly flapping his arms. I mean, one has to wonder whether the Screenwriters have any wit or originality at all when a huge hairy beast, who is bizarrely one of the passengers in a rickety aeroplane which almost crash lands into the Himalayas, vomits all over Hannah and the audience gets rewarded with the line 'the yak yakked'. Save us! Its not all bad news for Mummy 3, however. The Special Effects are at times, breathtaking and the spectacular, firework-laden chariot chase through the streets of Shanghai is certainly a highlight. Some of the Himalayan wide shots are stunning, presuming they're not all CGI and for part of the film, the O'Connell's transport is a ramshackle plane who's Pilot is Irish and addicted to alcohol - what a surprise! But one is left feeling deflated and frustrated at the end of the film. After yet another, computer-generated battle sequence, which is by far the poorest of the last decade, we cut straight back to downtown Shanghai! As if the whole battle sequence was just a dream. No results, no conclusions, no characters going their separate ways. Its sad the film suffers this way because its not the fault of the actors (well, perhaps Bello), or even the director - it’s the Screenwriters and Editors who are to blame here and no one else. I heard the reason Rachel Weisz chose not to reprise her role as Evelyn was due to 'problems with the Script'. That is the biggest understatement anybody could give this film and even if Weisz was in it, I don't think she could have saved it. A disappointing; overblown and at times, simply ridiculous end to what was once quite an exciting franchise! D Does anyone else agree?

If someone didn't sleep barely at all for 6 months, how bad would they age? And they're a 43 year old woman.? I mean I've been having sleeping problems for about 2 years. I take several meds to sleep ambien cr 12.5 mgs, klonopin 1.5 mgs. and seroquel 300mgs. Even though I take all these meds for sleep, I still feel I'm not getting enough sleep because I always look tired. I already feel I've aged some from the sleeplessness. I know you don't get the same kind of sleep with meds as you get on your own so I'm sure this has effected the aging process. But I'm afraid to wean down off meds and lose sleep, that could be even worse and go on for at least maybe 6 months. I mean 2 and 1/2 months to get off meds. Than maybe if I'm lucky 4 months to get to at lease 5 hours of my own sleep. What do you think this would do to me. I'm so afraid to stop the meds and try this but at the same time I'm afraid to keep taking them. So it a lose, lose situation. What would you do? I'm single and hope to maybe meet someone but if this causes me to look like an old bag. Also plastic surgery can't fix everything, I'd have the money for this but I'm still to young for this, so I mean they can't do anything about dark circles or puffy eyes unless they're actual bags. More wrinkles. HELP!!
can you edit this essay if you are better in english? "Beauty is in the eye of beholder," is an unknown proverb in contemporary society. It is a simple sentence that does not make sense anymore. Some women, and now many more men, think social interaction and personal success are dependent on physical attraction, and unfortunately, in this society, they are frequently right. Being perfect is a common issue, but when this issue becomes an obsession it can grow into a far more serious mental illness. Plastic surgery is a huge obsession among all people including preteens, teenagers, and adolescents. It is an obsession that is fed by models and celebrities who think nothing of going under the scalpel again and again in an elusive chase after a beauty icon that does not exist. Plastic surgery is not without risk. It is not a healthy way to look perfect. Plastic surgery can affect a person physically, socially and mentally, and it can have many side effects. It is a painful procedure that can even lead to death. There is a five percent death risk for all people who undergo anesthesia, especially general anesthesia, which is used in many cosmetic surgeries (Younai). A young mother, Dehlmalyz Rios, was 26 years old when she decided to have plastic surgery. Two days after the surgery her body rejected the fat that was deposited in her calves. She died, leaving two children behind. Clearly it can ruin the lives of more than just its proponents (Peru 2). Plastic surgery includes cutting, bending, stretching and other methods to manipulate body structure in order to get a desired shape. This causes pain, discomfort, and swelling that may remain for a lifetime. Some side effects, such as physical pain, are permanent. Plastic surgery can cause depression brought on by medication used to control the aftereffects of surgery. Poor and sometimes grotesque results may also bring on depression and other emotional problems. Of course there is always the post-surgical risk of pneumonia from having to remain in bed for long periods of time or as a result of forced inactivity, and there are the risks of infection and human error. Sometimes there are emotional traumas from the surgery not having the desired effect, or the person’s inability to accept, or disappointment with, the modifications. There can also be guilt or bad feelings caused by spouses, relatives, colleague or friends. Cosmetic surgery depends a great deal on the doctor’s qualifications. There are doctors who offer surgery at very low prices who are not skilled or qualified to perform plastic surgery. Most of these doctors are untrained except for a seminar in a hotel for a few hours. Credentials aren’t checked so that people who may not even be doctors are allowed to take these seminars. In Miami, a doctor named Reinaldo Silvestre, practiced surgery in a small office. He had very little medical training. One of his patients, named Alexandra Baez, claimed that he gave him breast implants instead of the pectoral muscle implant that he had requested (CNN). Many doctors who are performing plastic surgery are not licensed by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. They are quacks, get-rich-quick surgeons, who perform as many surgeries as they can and often under less than sterile conditions (Odenthal). Cosmetic surgery is not for everyone. This doesn’t prevent people from seeking it. Plastic surgery costs thousands of dollars and usually requires a good deal of recovery time. Some people sacrifice their basic needs to save enough money to pay for the surgery. There are those who say that plastic surgery should not be used to change someone’s appearance for the sake of vanity. Sometimes plastic surgery taken to the extreme can make someone look less than human, as is the case with Michael Jackson. People make fun of him, but he is wealthy enough that it doesn’t seem to affect his life. But what about the person who is not wealthy or what if a celebrity and the surgeon go wrong in making decisions? The surgeon may say he or she is sorry, but the surgeon can just walk away. The patient has to live with the awful results. But whether the surgical effects are deemed a success or failure, both the surgeon and the patient are responsible the surgery and the other performed it. With everything there is good and bad. Plastic surgery is no exception. Cosmetic surgery can make someone feel better about their looks, which may lead to an improved life. And certainly cosmetic surgery to repair birth defects, burns, and scars is a boon. But people need to realize that looking like a Hollywood star isn’t necessarily going to change your life or make you happier. They need to understand that things can and do go wrong with plastic surgery and the decision to have plastic surgery shouldn’t be taken lightly. Because when you get right down to it, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder. Plastic surgery is a risk that is undertaken with both sorrow and pleasure. Before making a decision, a person must consider risks such as unexpected costs, untrained surgeons, and physical pain during and after surgery. People should not be taken in by how inexpensive a surgery is; rather, they should be concerned about the most important thing of all: life. Plastic surgery is preferable for people who don't have other options, but it is not the best way to look like those Hollywood models and celebrities.

Botox. any info on it? worth it or not? I got fed up with these facial cremes which themselves cost a fortune, and really don't do all that much. Even the higher end stuff. They just make you look shiny, moisturized and can help to a degre, but when it comes to REALLY making you look better, sorry to all those anti-surgery types but... DING DING DING...plastic surgery including non-invasive, and botox shots ..just WORK! IT just works...there's no other way to really put it. I had it at least 3-4 times, and each time I get it in my forehead since I don't really have any lines anywhere else, but I wanted to know a few things. 1)Why is everyone against plastic surgery? Becuase they can't afford it, and are jealous, or just hate the whole fake look, and think society is going too far? Or beause they think it makes you look worse, or plastic and not better? 2) How long does botox REALLY last, how long does it take to start working, and are any of its effects cumulative, etc? 3)will TOUCHING that area u got botoxed at, ....make it wear off faster, or maybe help it seep in more? any botox experts here? oh yeah duh, last question... 4)WHY do they only put the botox in your forehead, crows feet, and thats pretty much it...?? MAYBE occasionally frown lines, but that's it, they really just don't put it,...anywhere? + why don't all these botox mimicking cremes, gaba creams, freeze 24/7, dr. brand crease release....none of it really works at all, to the degree that actual botox would. why do people rip themselves off buying that garbage? + why don't all these botox mimicking cremes, gaba creams, freeze 24/7, dr. brand crease release....none of it really works at all, to the degree that actual botox would. why do people rip themselves off buying that garbage?
Best way to lose stomach fat by August? Serious Answers Only Please!? Okay, so I am going on vacation in August, mid August I believe, and I would like to get rid of some, if not a lot, of my stomach fat so I don't look like a beached whale (okay, I'm not that fat, but my stomach isn't flat either), so, besides saying to walk every day or something like that, can you give a healthy, no bad side-effect causing, way of making some of my stomach fat to go away, even if it takes the entire several months until August. Thank you if you can. Also, I don't really care a whole lot if I lose a whole lot of weight, my weight isn't a concern to me, just my stomach fat is. Another thing is don't say anything like plastic surgery or something like that, that's crazy. lol
Are you affected by 'moobs' and 'double chins'...? High-flying men are queueing up to splash out on expensive plastic surgery in spite of the recession, surgeons say. The Harley Medical Group says the number of males going under the knife to get rid of double chins and "moobs" has jumped by more than a quarter in the last 12 months. It said city workers, civil servants and men working in politics, law and accountancy were most likely to use its services. Operations to reduce flabby breasts - dubbed "moobs", an abbreviation of "man boobs" - are among those most in demand. Surgeons saw a 61% increase in requests for the operation, which costs more than £4,000. Mini-facelifts to remove jowls, costing nearly £5,000, saw a 96% increase in popularity. However, demand for blepharoplasty, an operation to remove eye bags, was down by 16%. Riccardo Frati, a surgeon with the group, said: "The bad diets, punishing hours and stress that often go hand in hand with these types of professions make men prime candidates for premature ageing. "We're not surprised to see a trend emerge for professions most likely to opt for surgery as the side-effects of a punishing job can cause the loss of skin elasticity and encourage build-up of stubborn fat in key areas." More than 1,500 patients were questioned for the survey. http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/High-Flying-Men-Turn-To-Plastic-Surgery-To-Get-Rid-Of-Their-Man-Boobs/Article/200905115275351?lpos=UK_News_First_UK_News_Feature_Teaser_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_15275351_High-Flying_Men_Turn_To_Plastic_Surgery_To_Get_Rid_Of_Their_Man_Boobs Your views please. Why should women be legally allowed to take birth control pills? OK, I'm all for your right to take the pill, please let me explain where I'm going with this. Birth control pills steroids (fake versions of hormones in your body) estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen of corse if the female sex hormone. The pill is mostly taken by women who don't need it but want to make their bodies do something. Specifically, prevent getting pregnant. So shouldn't it also be allowed for a man to take fake testerone? Fake testerone tells his body to grow more muscle. There are side effects and if abused, the side effects are worse. But most healthy men can take them safely. They might notice their testiles being smaller because they don't have to make as much because men are getting some from an injection. But after he comes off them, the testicles return to their normal size. Contrary to popular belief, steroid can't be linked to cancer any more than cell phones can. Liver damage can happen but only if abused. The aggressive behavior rumors are greatly exaggerated. Taken in extreme doses can cause bone breakdown but not in the normal dose that is recommended. Most men can find healthy outlets for such things. It's only cheating if a man plays a competitive sport which most men in America don't. Death from steroids overdose is extremely rare. Only about 2 or 3 deaths per year. Far more rare than women dying from a botched plastic surgery trying to get what nature didn't give her. So since women are allowed to take their sex hormone, with some risks, for something that isn't medically necessary as a women's rights issue, why can't a man take his? Isn't it only fair?
Can sombody correct my grammar? The number of plastic procedures performed increases all over the world. What could explain this sudden and dramatic increase? Plastic surgery that is originally for reconstructive purposes that aid people who have deformities on their physical figures is now spread out for aesthetic purposes that satisfies people with the image of perfection. Before people undergo plastic surgery, there are several steps that people take such as creating their own ideal of beauty caused by the factors of the media, peer pressure and the cultural value. Those factors help establish the perception of body image. The body ideals that come from the media, peer pressure and the cultural value vary according to individual personality or perception. So then, the negative perception of body image causes low self-esteem and the it leads people to have body dissatisfaction. This dissatisfaction then yields people to have plastic surgery. Understanding the consequences of plastic surgery and effective interventions to reduce plastic surgery is main core of the study. The consequences of plastic surgery vary among people. The consequences can be problematic for some people and it can be an effective way to improve their life and identity. These days, people tend to get judged by their appearance. They experience being limited by their work places based on their appearance. Even though they have a great capacity to perform, the employer doesn't hire them due to their appearance. People value on their appearance more than their ability. "Body perfect" ideals are transmitted and reinforced by various social influences. The social factors have good influences and bad influences. First of all, the mass media are seen as a“particularly potent and pervasive source of influence, evidenced by a virtual explosion of studies on media exposure and body dissatisfaction”(Dittmar 2). Media demonstrates unrealistic media image of the thin women. As people have more chance to see the perfect body image reflected on the media, they create their own ideal of beauty. Then, the images of perfection manipulated by the media become central to the way we judge others. The article titled “Cosmetic Surgery Makeover Programs and Intentions to Undergo Cosmetic Enhancements: A Consideration of Three Models of Media Effects”, Robin Nabi said as with idealized body images, frequent exposure to media depictions of patients undergoing cosmetic enhancement procedures might negatively impact body dissatisfaction, create an unrealistically positive view of such procedures, and increase demand for them” (Nabi 3). For example, famous celebrities often undergo plastic surgery in order to look better on the screen. By seeing them on the screen, people realize how successful the surgery was and gets motivated to do the same thing as the other celebrities did. Second, the media is not the only source of influence on body image. Peer pressure also affects people to create the negative perception of body image and it leads people to have low self-esteem about themselves. People experience the negative feedback such as teasing about their appearance. Especially, male friends’ criticism of females’ physical appearance negatively affects young women. Peer and parents may pressure people to be become thinner in direct or indirect ways. Direct means of pressure to be thin include “criticism or teasing about aspects of physical appearance”(Shomaker and Furman 873). Indirect means of pressure include modeling of dieting or body image dissatisfaction (873). Their perceptions of pressure to be a perfect model from peer and parents are strongly correlated with body image dissatisfaction. People with body image dissatisfaction are motivated to change their physical appearance on the basis of the feedback from others.
Broken Scaphoid bone for 7 months now.. 2 surgery's and still not better.. advice or help? I broke my Scaphoid bone in my wrist 7 months ago playing football/soccer when I was in goal a hard shot hit my hand and snapped it back...I originally was put in a plaster cast but after 3 weeks my skin reacted so badly I had to take it off myself and bought a removable plastic cast to use...Il admit I was not very good during this time and often forgot to wear my plastic cast and used my hand to lift heavy things stupidly....... after 7 weeks it wasn't better so I went for my first surgery where they did a bone graft and put a screw through it and I was sent away with my removable cast again as my skin couldn't handle the plaster cast.. I treated my hand alot better and didn't lift anything heavy but did run alot 5 times a week roughly... 8 weeks later the fracture was still not better... i was told to give it another chance and waited yet another 8 weeks but xrays showed it was still fractured.... I had my second operation last week where they removed the screw did a vascular bone graft and put pins in the bone....... I still have doubts about whether even this will work... i often feel a stinging feeling when using my hand for typing or using the mouse on a computer... my surgeon also didnt seem that positive about the op saying it was very tricky and the pins are fragile and that I have to be extra careful.. he said the reason it wasnt healing is because the fracture is on the lower part of the scapohid and there is a low or even no blood supply to the bone which is needed for it to heal.. the vascular bone graft should help the blood supply problem but could anyone give me any advice on what to do as I am really losing it...I have stopped running and will wear my removable cast 24/7 and avoid lifting anything with my right hand.... I am really getting down I am 21 and it has been 7 months and 2 surgerys so far with a broken wrist...I used to be broad and lifted weights 5 times a week but ive lost so much weight and my arms and chest have shrunk so much due to the fact i havent lifted weights for 7 months! the one thing I enjoyed was running but now I have been told to stop that as well in case it was having a negative effect on the bone fracture... I didnt think it made a difference as you run with your legs not your wrist but i did it anyway just in case and have swapped it for cycling in the gym which I dont enjoy as much but is practically the last physical activity im allowed to do! I am so depressed and I have a bad feeling even this second surgery wont work :( any help or advice from anyone who knows about this sort of fracture or has had it themselves please!? I dont know what Id do if this surgery doesn't work and I'm told to have a third one or wait even longer :( Thanks in advance Alex
Is my boyfriend lying to me? This is embarrassing, but whatever... My boyfriend told me in October that he tried getting hard off of porn but it didn't give him the same effect as it did before, and that I'm the only girl that could get him hard now... and he was really embarrassed about telling me it, but he was saying how I'm the only girl that makes him feel that way. I asked him a last week if that was still true, and he was like "Uhm.. well you haven't been around, so I watched porn", and I was asking him about it, like if he thought they were better looking than me, and I don't know if he purposely was trying to make me jealous or upset but he would hesitate and be like "I don't want to answer that" knowing that he obviously meant yes, or he'd be like well they get plastic surgery to make them look perfect, so it's hard to compare.. and he was being a dick about it. This made me really insecure, so I told him he made me feel really bad about myself, and consider plastic surgery so I didn't want to see him anymore. So a few days later, he asked me to go with him to dinner because he missed me, so I went because there was nothing else to do that day... and we didn't talk the whole time, then after he told me he hadn't watched porn and that he had watched a movie that this girl had been topless and it reminded him of me... so he decided to go to the bathroom and yeah... and he said the whole he thought about us , and being romantic with me.. and that he doesn't want to change a thing about me and that plastic surgery is for people who actually need it and that I am perfect the way I am and he doesn't want me to be fake. He also said that even if he did look at porn on the internet he'd get in trouble with the people he's staying with.. Do you think he's lying? If so, why would he make me feel like crap? Why would he confuse me like that ? If it helps, he says he doesn't remember the last time he looked at porn, and that the last time he did it didn't give him the same heat as it did before because it's just fake..
Why are muslim women happier than western women? i'm a muslim woman and im really happy in my culture. western society and culture degrades women and treats them as sexual objects, thats why there are stripclubs, pornography, plastic surgery, makeup , high heels, etc. i would never become a feminist because i dont have anything to fight against. i dont feel oppressed. muslim men treat me with respect as a person i dont wear a headscarf but i dress modestly. i know my mind is the most attractive part of me . and i would rather attract a man with my personality and intelligence than my looks why do western women put makeup full of toxic chemicals on their face. i think makeup is a lot like a burqa , either way, women are not allowed to be themself, they have to be what men want them to be. for burqa- controlled sexuality (because you are a sexual object). for makeup - exaggerate sexuality (because you are a sexual object). thats why burqas and makeup are wrong. some western women even say that they can't go out of the house without makeup. makeup gets absorbed in your skin and is full of chemicals..... but why.... just to look good for men ? why do western women get plastic surgery. im mentally trautamized when i heard of breast implant. that is so wrong. a doctor cuts their body with a knife and puts silicone in their sexual part ? surgery has serious side effects, but the pain and cutting your body , is the worst . western women get liposuction , its basically like put vaccum cleaner inside your body to suck out the fat, and botox injections in their face. just to look good for men ? wow... that is crazy . thats is a truly barbaric society .... i dont see the difference between plastic surgeyr and female circumsion. except female circumcsion is so extremely rare in arab countries for the last 100 years . and plastic surgery is getting more and more common in the west. why do western women wear high heels? did you know you can get arthritis and bunions and back pain ? why do women go to work, but then they spend all their money on fashion, makeup, shoes, bag. and also why do they get paid less than a man for the same job. after i finish my education, i dont want to work, because i know that my husband will take care of me ...... why do western women go on diet and starve themselves? theres people dying of world hunger and some people are willingly starve themselves? they could get osteoporosis when they get older because their body didnt get the nutrients. just to look good for a man? why do western women rolde models are people like women who take their clothes off, pose in playboy , kim kardashian , etc my role model is marie curie. she is the only person , male or female, to win two nobel prizes. but no one even knows about her. i want to get a good education and learn about things im interested in. i dont want to have a job like slave to the economy , and i dont want to spend my money like a slave to consumerism i could literally go on forever. this is something me and my friends talk about a lot. most western women i see are unhappy , they have low self esteem , but they are pretty, intelligent, nice people, why don't they realize that? i didnt mean to lecture but i hope i can open some of their eyes. im not asking them to convert to islam but open your eyes and be a person , not a object , after i finish college, i want to be a wife and mother. but some muslim women have jobs too. i dont want a job, personally , because i like learning , reading, finding out things , more than working . but the thing i want to do most, is to have babies , and raise children , those are important jobs that women did since the start of history.
Regretting monroe piercings; Is there ever any way to completely get rid of the scar if I have to take it out? Okay, so. Tuesday I got my monroes done. (Angel bites.) And I absolutely LOVE them. I don't WANT to take them out, but I might for like jobs. (example: I act at a local theater and I know they won't let me audition if I have these in.) Right now, my upper lip is so swollen. (This is normal?) It's to the point where the bottom is almost in my lip all the way and it burns. They ball on the top(the part you see) is now starting to dip in my skin. I've heard this is normal the first like week or so. I've been looking into side effects and I see: Terrible scarring and tooth enamel and gum wear. Did I just make the biggest mistake of my life? Please don't forget, I LOVE this piercings in my face. I don't really want to HAVE to take them out. Question #1: I'm aware that everyone's skin is different, and they MAY or may NOT scar. If the scar I get from these angel bites is just a minor darker/lighter mark, I'll use Mederma or Bio Oil to get rid of it in time. What I'm really worried about, is an indentation in my skin. I don't want there to be a huge hole in my face. I'm aware I MIGHT get one. My skin on my face doesn't ever scar though. So I'm not sure. If I do ever take them out, and I'm unhappy with the marks left behind, what are some cosmetic things I can do to fill the hole in, and look normal? I've thought that MAYBE you could go to a plastic surgery place and get it filled in my collagen? Or something? Microdermabrasion? Some kind of filler? PLEASE HELP. (If my nose piercing also leaves a hole, which it didn't last time I pierced it, can I do the same thing to this?) Question #2: I've also read that it caused a TON of damage to your teeth enamel and gums. I've spent so much money to make my teeth perfect. I don't want any damage. Right now, my angel bites are healing. And I can't change the pole to a smaller one for another week or so. (Even though, at the moment, I really need a longer one. Lol.) Blah blah, everyone's different, and I've heard some people do or don't have any damage at all. So, when it's healed up enough to change it, should I make the pole smaller so it doesn't touch my teeth/gums? And what about making the back of the piercing a plastic one? Right now, it's a flat back. I've heard those are bad. Chipped teeth and wear. Would a piercer know what I mean when I say I'd like a plastic back? I've heard those don't cause any damage at all. To help me out, I'd love to see some before and after pictures. Maybe a story about you piercings and what happened? I'm actually only 14, and I love my face. But I also love the piercings. Please, please, PLEASE help me out. I'm getting really scared. P.S. I'd like to keep them in for a few years. I paid a LOT for these, and I don't want to lose them early.

Why are people so quick to diagnose you these days and say you have a chemical imbalance? I'll admit I've been depressed for some time now and on occasion it has been severe but whatever happened to "well that's life, you have to get used to it!" I'm not a teenager at 28 and would have to say my awareness of depression probably started when I was about to turn 19. Oddly enough I was studying Psychology at the time and to me it seems like the more introspective I became the worse my depression got...started feeling like I had been depressed my entire life and blah blah blah. But what got me back on track was realizing that yeah, I had depressing times but who doesn't? Life is messy, it's not all peaches and cream and Ozzy and Harriet...death is horrific and more frightening than anything Stephen King can conjure up. The weird thing about it..I noticed around that time 2002-2003 is when all this technology was spiraling out of control...I was contented in my high school years without a cell phone but then when on college campus you couldn't even meet anyone in the courtyards because they were all looking down into their cellphones, I didn't even have one or a laptop. People who look at me like a weirdo for not having them and being super perficent with all things technological...maybe I'm getting off on a tangent. The whole idea of having anxiety, and this kid is bi-polar, we have children's prozac, he has a "chemical imbalance" whatever happened to kids will be kids, now there are like entrance exams for pre-schools, it's ridiculous. I think it's just a major scam by the drug manufacturers to make more money...it's reported that 2 out of 3 people who take anti-depressants are still severely depressed, and side effects of those drugs usually include thoughts of suicide and actual suicide...like WOW, you really think it's a good idea? Can't we just agree that life can be sad and you have to take the good with the bad instead of trying to pinpoint every thought and anxious feeling and overly medicate and wrongly diagnose..it's outrageous, I worked in a pharmacy and there were all these clinical test and documents that would be contradicted by clinical tests and documents 2 months later!!!!! It's bs. The tangent I was going on earlier was that I feel our culture is just becoming increasingly more bankrupt leading to more depression and anxiety..it has nothing to do with chemical imbalance of the brain and everything to do with this celebrity obsessed, instant fame, twittering and facebooking your way into fame superficial culture. How can you not feel like a sucker working hard when some dimwit yo can barely pee straight can become a millionaire overnight by constantly having his nose stuck in a electronic device, who are you not to tell your kids then can get plastic surgery and make viral videos and become america's next top model or idol when there are instant success stories of people who did just that and really didn't have to work that hard to get to where they are, all day everyday they see it on the computers, iPhone, whatever... it has really lowered the quality of life...instead of taking the good with the bad and trying to feel good sometimes we obsess about trying to feel good every single second of every single day which in my opinion leads to people never truly being happy ever... It has become my haters are my motivators, people enjoy being hated and see it as a level of success and respect, like they are being envied...that's just poor morals. Am I wrong or should I take some medication and join the zombie ranks?
lm finding it impossible for me to attend school? at least for a whole week? anxiety and more? please help? Hi, l am 16 year old girl and a sophomore in highschool. And school has been becoming very hard for me. One main thing is about my appearance. l am actually hideous especially the sides of my face. like today l passed by a mirror and a girl was there too and she said "ew" when she saw my reflection.that put me down so much. whenever l try to talk to people their face looks mean and uninterested. it hurts my feelings. it does not matter how nice l am, people dont want to be seen with the ugly girl. l cant afford products to fix myself up and l dont have time in the morning. either way l dont want to change now anyway l dont want people talking. l now find it nearly impossible for me to go there for 5 straight days. lm absent at least twice a week. lm getting bad grades and some teachers dont even bother with me anymore. its all due to my appearance. l dont know whats wrong with me. l guess it steams from me being called ugly way too much when l was younger. it was so bad. l am too ugly to be in school. even teachers give me dirty looks for my looks. l am mistreated and l am outcast. l want to vomit because l dont want people to see my face. especially the side of my face it is sooo hideous!! l want to throw up by looking at it, l try and cover my sides with both of my hands but that looks ridiculous so l put my head down. its so hard being ignored by people and not wanting to get to know you for your looks. l feel like cursed, l am getting plastic surgery when l am old enough right away. at first l thought l had BDD but then realized its just for pretty people who think they are ugly, l really am ugly and people think so too. my appearance is all l think about. l think about it every second in school thinking "is my nose sticking out too much?" "l bet that person thinks lm ugly, that's why they are so far away..." l cant take it anymore. l want to leave school! its a living hell if you are ugly. l am not confident and never will be lm shy, scared, and it hurts to be constantly stared at like a monster by people every single day and being all alone. trust me it is not in my head, this really happens l am well aware. please help me l feel like dying, my ugliness is destroying my life l dont why it effects me so much. l wish i could just not care about it and what they think. but it is way too hard. l wish but something in me still wants to be accepted by others. :/ l have anxiety attacks in the morning and it causes to stay home way too much. One day when l actually forced myself to go to school l nearly fainted on the sidewalk and had a tough time breathing. that day in school was the worst. now lm scared to go tomorrow. l have the face of a monster. l dont know what to do anymore, i wish i wasn't so ugly, my life would have been SO MUCH different if l just looked like a normal girl, l want to kill myself. what should l do? my life is going downhill and my mom is getting really worried and crying over me. l feel terrible, should l take medication? drop out of school to escape this? thanks so much! sorry this was long
Please help!! Awful eye bags? O.K, so I have these really REALLY bad eye bags! Honestly, they are so big, like sacks. Anyway, they are probably hereditary, but they get worse during the week when I go to school (I wake up at 6:30). I even started sleeping for 9 hours three weeks ago, and they are still there! Even on weekends I have dark circles! I know there are load of 'remedies' for eye bags like putting a cucumber over your eyes, or a cold spoon et cetera, but they seem to have limited, if any effects. I do drink quite a bit of water, but not 2 or 3 litres everyday, because I do not believe that you should drink when you are not thirsty. I know there are like 10 questions that say the same thing, but I would like suggestions from people who actually know how to treat these awful eye bags! >.< Oh yeah, I am a teen, not an adult/old lady, so do not go on about plastic surgery, as I can't get that done, and I don't think I even want to. Also, I dream A LOT, so when I wake up sometimes I am really tired. So thanks for listening to my really boring explanation, and I hope you can help me. :) - Also, they have become so bad now, people who where polite (cringe) enough not to say anything have said things like: 'Wow. You have really big eye bags'. - And I put this in optical health because I don't think it fits in 'beauty and style'
Why did I have to be born ugly? I'm one of those people that am well aware that i'm not attractive to most people. I get annoyed pretty easily if something like appearance effects a persons ability to honestly have a conversation with something. Thus a reason why I find any preppy jock to be super annoying. ( No I was never bullied. Just can't stand their cocky attitudes.) It's just one of those things that aren't quite fair, I mean why does a person thats pretty get to be born that way and not me? Obviously it deals with genetics, which 1 ugly person + another ugly person (= 99.9% ugly child, .1% attractive) shouldn't have kids if it just results in continual bad genes. ( No i don't typically think this. This is just more of me venting. I, myself have a son but he's the .1%, and to top it off his father isn't ugly.) I guess I just wish that other than being giving the option to get plastic surgery (which I don't think it would make me look better,) it would be nice if people could be giving the option to be born again instead. ;) LOL. Okay, that's pretty ridiculous but oh well. Thanks for reading, from the ugly ogre chick xP
why is it that most women lie on their real age? They tend to go for beauty cosmetics to hide their real age and dress up like the young ones which looked awkward to their age. Others would go for exercises and diet. They tend go for plastic surgery like noselift, facelift and others. I believe that accepting real age makes one more comfortable since nobody went back and become young again . Its accepting the cycle of life.Denying means you are not ready to accept yourself day by day. Which to its extent you assert and feels uncomfortable ever moment, which in turn adds more to your stress and worst could end up to psychological and physiologic effects to your whole body. It becomes stressful and unwanted secretions of the body will in effect lead to your being moody, fright of what happens tomorrow of your skin, nobody likes you, you are unattractive. In real sense you become so insecured and paranoid of what you look like. How pityful for one who lives like this. Everybody goes to this graceful end of growing old and its a blessin

I am 23 years old. Should I get a nose job even though my family is so against it? I am in a very tough position. I am a 23 year old female that has wanted rhinoplasty since I was in my teens. I am finally able to have he surgery. I warned my father, who is disgusted with the idea of plastic surgery, that I am serious about this. I finally found a doctor that I trust in and am thrilled to have the procedure. My father is really struggling with the idea. My surgery has been a few months coming (now 3 weeks away) but I really believe that he believed I was going to back out, but I'm not. He has strongly expressed to me his concearns. He says I am a beautiful young woman, and I have been a perfect daughter and made him so proud until now. I think one of his biggest concearns is also the way my 86 year old grandparents are going to handle it. I know they will never understand and will be very disappointed. They came from a different time. My dad is freaking out, the closer and closer the date gets the more upset he is getting. He reccommends I see a councelor because he feels I must have serious self esteem issues. I have told him over and over again how long I have wanted this but he doesn't believe me or doesn't want to believe it. I brought it up years ago but saw how angry and stubborn he was about it and didn't mention it again until I was serious and ready to actually do it. I am sorry if this is all mumble jumbled and full of typos. I am very close with my family so this is really taking a toll on me. This is something that I was so bad, but something that might seriously effect my relationship with my family. I don't know what to do. How can I help my family understanf? Or should I really give up what I want? Please help. Any advise is appreciated. The pressure of all of this is killing me! Thank you!
Am I legible for medical marijuana use? I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when I was three, and declared cured by the age of 8. During that time, I had two surgeries, one to put in a portocath, and one to remove said portocath. I was left with a scar, and ever since the surgery, has caused me much pain. I have told my doctors about it, and after years of bringing this up to them, they offered me a form of plastic surgery, but it risks making the problem worse, no garuntee it will do anything, and it would need to be done every 2-3 years to be effective. Also, a year ago I was perscribed 20mg of cipralex a day, and another drug (The name i've forgotten) That I stopped taking because it stopped working. The cipralex was for anxiety, and the other medication was for sleep. I'm going to the doctors soon for my annual check up, and I was wodering if I am legible for the use of medical marijuana. I've been smoking marijuana for the past six months or so, and i've lot a bit of weight, my anxiety is almost non-existent, I sleep like a baby, and I don't wake up in the night, and the pain in my chest is gone. It's been helping me physically, emotionally, and by extension, academically. I don't need to be "high" for all of these effects. The high is short-lived, but the benefits are long-lived. Other relevant information: I live in Ontario, Canada. I'm 17. I have gone through periods of depression I've been smoking for about 6 or 7 months, I had only smoked marijuana a few times prior to that. I smoke regularly (Every, or every other night.) Thanks, any info would be appreciated.
Huge Problem Concerning Acne? I'm just 15 and I have major acne issues. I've tried everything. I used different brands of face wash, like Neutragena, Proactive, and Clinique. I've slathered yogurt on my skin because it's supposed to absorb the nutrition or something. I've also tried to drink tons and tons of fluids a day and swallow some fish oil pills. I wash my face EVERYDAY, twice a day and sometimes three, dabbing (not scrubbing) toner on and gently rubbing on moisturizer. I tie back my bangs and hair so they would spread nacteria over my face (I always wash my hair, but just in case). After, I put a little acne terminating cream over the really affected area and it doesn't work. No I'm not allergic to anything and I know teenagers are in a prime time to break out, but they use some technique and gets perfect skin the next day. I'm so frustrated because everything I try to do has no effect and by the time the acne is gone, its been like a month, or even more. I have acne on my forehead ever since grade 6 and I can't do anything about it. And after the major ance leaves, its leaves a tiny discoloration and I find it very annoying. I also try to refrain from touching my face and wearing makeup as it can make me break out more, but it probably won't matter because everything I tried has failed. It's gotten so bad to the point that I think about plastic surgery. If any suggestions, please. All I need is, yes, a miracle. D: Yes, I eat healthy. I eat mostly vegetables and grain. Sometimes eat meat, usually fruit, and normal amount of fats >.< And sometimes dairy, though I'm not a huge fan.
When is it time to seek professional help for a child? My 3 year old daughter has had a tuff time with her health- and as a result has had more than her fair share of doctors, hospitals, tests, poking, prodding, etc. she is petrified and usually cries until she throws up when she even sees someone in a lab coat at this point. recently- she had a fall. she put a bad cut on her chin and had to have plastic surgery. b/c of her age, weight and health they strongly recommended that we didn't put her under so instead she had local anestesia. we held her down as she screamed bloody murder and the doctor spent 45 minutes stitiching up her face. since then, she has been withdrawn and quiet. i know that kids go thru this stuff all of the time, but i am getting worried that it might have really effected her in some way. are there any mental health experts that can tell me what i should be looking out for, what sort of help i might want to get her, and when?
Should steroids be "controlled" like diet pills are controlled and not like cocaine is controlled? Just say if I wanted to get on them I would go to a doctor who would give me a physical to make sure I'm healthy enough, prescribe me only enough for one cycle, then schedule a monthly followup to make sure I'm healthy enough to continue. And also do blood urine work to make sure I'm not already on them from another doctor. At one time I was fat so I tried going to a diet doctor for phentermine... There is no way steroids are worse for a person than that stuff; Which any fat person in America can go in and get on. There are side effects and some risks involved. Anyone time someone goes under the knife for plastic surgery for what nature didn't give them they risk death of a botched plastic surgery. slykitty, steroids haven't been shown to cause brain tumors any more than cell phones do. Yes it can make some people aggressive. So do many other legal prescription drugs. Phentermine makes people aggressive. And any fat person can go get a script for that in a heartbeat. Michael, cortisone has more risk for side effects than anabolic steroids do.
I feel suicidally depressed because I look UGLY and not pretty? (long) (DON'T ANSWER IF YOUR GONNA BE AN A**)? All my DARN LIFE I always wanted to be attractive, smart, social, and successful, but I've achieved NOTHING no matter how hard I tried, and I really give up for good. I nearly failed 6th and 7th grade, and right now 8th grade sucks just as bad, and people in my family and some kids at school think I'm a complete shithead. I do have a small circle of friends and I am social but I feel like I'm a waste of their time and they'd be better off without me because whenever I try to be fun or funny I end up sounding and acting like an idiot. Besides, They most likely all hate me. I hate everything physical about me. My black hair is unkempt and untidy when loose so I keep it up in a boring ponytail all the time. My stomach and legs are flabby so I can never wear cute tight fitting tee shirts shorts or capris without feeling fat even though I've lost weight from 117 to 101 at 5'1. I have ugly zit breakouts and stubborn blackheads on my huge too-wide flat nose. My eyes are too dark and chinky. I have acne scars on my forehead. My face/head is a f**kin watermelon. and Lord, don't even mention my eyebrows!! Scraggly like a mans! I'm seriously putting into effect a makeover asap. I don't care about the cost. New hair, new makeup, hair removal and everything, and if that doesn't work I want a full face plastic surgery. If I can never afford plastic surgery or never get it to improve the way I look I really just want to die, cause I'll never marry a cute kind guy, or be appreciated so I don't care. That's how low I feel right now. If you see my picture.. you'll end up gagging all over your monitor but you'll see why. And if it ACTUALLY looks good to you, than either your BLIND or my only single moment of being photogenic came out. http://i34.tinypic.com/5lwaqo.jpg I know I need therapy, but I'm getting it soon and I don't feel like it's ever going to change my self-esteem. I just really want to kill myself cause I can't do anything right in life.
"I miss! my old pointy nose".? I really regret to of had plastic surgery on my nose, the doctor took away my nice defined pointy nose, so now it's round & short & no definition on it. But, anyway! i've recently noticed that, if i apply pressure to my nose for at least 7 minutes, it makes the tip of my nose pointy & beautiful like i used to have it,but, the effect only lasts for about 30 minutes or so, because my nose retracts back to my original round lame state. My question is: is it bad for me to be compressing my nose every half hour, every day just to look good all the time? I do this about 20 or 30 times a day & sometimes my nose gets sore. What do you think?. I knew i was going to get kindergarden answers!.. maybe i should ask somebody with intelect! in the medical field?..
Body after childbirth...anyone have plastic surgery? Before I had kids I was always against plastic surgery for the most part, but after having 2 kids planning on a 3rd my body is nowhere near the way it used to be. I just turned 23. I have been seriously thinking about getting a tummy tuck & breast augmentation ( aka mommy makeover) I don't want it for anyone else other than myself. My husband says Im fine the way I am but I feel very uncomfortable with the way my body looks. It has effected my life greatly. I know I shouldn't let it but it does. I cannot wear the clothes I want to wear, I can forget about any type of swimsuit! I have to wear a push-up bra to put my boobs back in place and a sports bra to hold them into the push-up bra...the whole thing is annoying! I don't even want to get into my diastasis recti/umbilical hernia. lol Lets just say I look at least 3 months pregnant still! Have tried the special exercises...nothing has helped. Anyways I was just curious if anyone has been through this and actually got the surgeries done? I would like to hear any opinions good or bad, Thanks! I in no way regret having kids. I love my kids to death and would have them all over again if I had the choice. This is just something I have been thinking about doing later on. I am proud of my every stretch mark but i would like to be able to wear a pretty dress sometime without having a bulge of extra skin lol My breasts aren't really what I am worried about. I am mostly looking into just the tummy tuck. My youngest is almost a year. I have been working out since the dr gave me the ok. Its not fat that I have that bothers me. Its skin.
Should I get a nose job? My nose was broken during a rather vicious game of dodge ball when I was 14. When my nose healed, it formed a large bump on the left side of my nose. I am now 19 and considering getting a nose job to remove the bump. I am usually against plastic surgery for vanity's sake, but since this bump is not natural, I do not think removing it is such a bad idea. It is unsightly and I feel that people look more at my nose than into my eyes when talking to me. I'm especially afraid my nose will have a negative effect in job searching. Do you think a nose job is a good idea for me?

I cry everyday because of how I look...? It just kind of came to me that my looks effect EVERYTHING I do. My schoolwork, my relationships with my parents, my friends, EVERYTHING. For example, I usually don't want to go anywhere my mom wants me to go because I'm scared to go out in public, everytime I'm out in public I stare down because I don't want to see the looks on people's faces when they see me (but I'm actually a very outgoing person, not shy at all). It is a torture to go somewhere. My mom gets mad because she doesn't understand why I don't go anywhere. I always complain about my looks to my friends, they are getting annoyed. So, I usually cover up everything and act all bubbly around them. I stare at myself in the mirror everyday for minimum of 2 hours. I stare at all my flaws and see how I can fix them. I have a HUGE forehead. I look scary with my hair back. I have the worst body type EVER, I have no ass or boobs, but all fat. I look like I'm pregnant when I'm sitting. I have food problems, I count everything I eat, and I always binge because tha'ts just what I do. So I gain lots of weight. Oh, my face is extremely fat, and my hair is disgusting. It's effecting me in so many ways. I don't approach guys, I always refuse to go places, I can't focus on school, I waste time staring at the mirror, I always have to suck in my stomach and cover my leg fat when I walk. And I don't think this is Body Dysmorphic Disorder because I DO look ugly. It's not like I'm pretty and I think I look ugly. Anyways, how can I fix this? What can I do to make myself feel better? I'm planning going on a crash diet, starting tomorrow, which will fix some things. And I'm saving up money for plastic surgery for when I'm older (I'm 16 now). But how can I fix myself mentally? Tips? Anything? If I have any tips for what? How to cry? I KNOW HOW TO FUCKING EAT. I SPEND 24 HOURS A DAY RESEARCHING, EATING, BREATHING NUTRITION, FOOD, CALORIES. How would you know I'm overweight? Are you staring at me right now?

And I don't think this is Body Dysmorphic Disorder because I DO look ugly.l have been called ugly since l was 10 from family, to friends, to even random strangers in the street, even a lady working at the salon said l was so ugly even my own mother called me it twice. Why are women expected to put more effort, time and money into their appearence than men? I don't really understand why as time goes on, men's appearences remain as they have been for the last century and women are encouraged to become more and more "beautiful". They are so many advertisments out there directed only at women. Whatever happened to women only dressing up for date..when now women wear full hair and makeup just to go to work or even worse...school! I think women are naturally beautiful, so i dont really understand where this uncontrollable snowball effect has come from? Im concerned that it is going to get to the point where every woman is having plastic surgery. I started wearing makeup when I was 16, but I take a look around and I see girls of 12 wearing loads of makeup and I think its wrong. I really dont want my daughter to start wearing makeup at 8!!!!! Im scared! What are your views? Does this concern you too? Do you think it will slow down or even better reverse?
writing an argumentative paper against plastic surgery..i need 3 cons about it? i have to write an essay having 3 strong points that go against plastic surgery and what is bad about it i already have the risks and how the media effects it in a bad way but i cant think of a 3rd one does anyone have any ideas ill take any.. then i have to counter those by saying 2 topics that people would defend why plastic surgery is good and then i defend that it is still bad what are some ideas for those 2 topics???
What do you think about Sylvia Browne's 40 predictions for the next 100 years? 1. Eradication of cancer as we know it, using sound waves, photo sensitive drug therapy, and "self-addicting" cells. 2. Robotic houses, controlled by computerized switchboard. 3. Electrical cars with flotation ability for water travel to bypass freeways. 4. Houses made from pressed paper with plastic coatings; interchangeable walls 5. Separate body parts cloned for organ transplants; not an entire body. 6. New form of painless tooth extraction, using a type of suction, with immediate replacement of new tooth. 7. Diagnostic chambers which map the body's electrical balance to predict health problems before the come. 8. Cylindrical rooms in which people enter to see an automated projection of the clothing and color that would look good on them; select what you want, take your measurements, then two days later pick up the goods. 9. Third floor of houses have rollback roofs to allow Hovercrafts to come and go. 10. No more surgery with knives. Some type of molecular ionization device that knows how to take out the afflicted cells then seal the wound without a single scar. 11. Remolding of the whole face structure, to duplicate any look that you wish. 12. New exercise equipment that you sit or stand in, and it literally stimulates your muscles with electricity to achieve the same effect as physical exercise. 13. Babies will be birthed in water all the time, with music, incense, and green and lavender lights. 14. People will be able to simply "walk out" of their bodies upon death. 15. There will be no US Presidency; our government will go back to a Greek Senate structure. 16. No longer a single Pope, but a triumvirate of Popes, each assigned to a geographic collection of Catholics. 17. Peace in the Middle East will prevail by 2050. 18. West Coast goes under in 2026. Parts of the East Coast also get inundated. Tsunamis will wipe out a large portion of Japan. The Hawaiian Islands will have upheaval and be the site of a large new landmass. 19. Atlantis will begin to show itself by 2023 and be fully visible by 2026. 20. After 2050, the "Age of the Messiah" is upon us. People turn totally toward Spirituality, peace will rein for a long time. People will return to community living, loving each other, and working together. 21. Treatment for depression and mood disorders will come from a "control chamber" that emits sensory stimulation gently to the brain, including certain smells, which will elevate mood. 22. Medicine in pill form goes away; instead we have air-injected delivery through the skin. 23. Atomic batteries will run cars. 24. No more gas propelled rockets in space; we will have nuclear powered cylinder shaped objects that travel everywhere. 25. A moon base is created for people to visit, and as a stopping place for further trips. 26. By 2055 most people will live in domed cities due to poor atmospheric conditions. 27. A virtual reality headset will stimulate brain waves so people can learn whole libraries of information within hours. 28. Giant fruits and vegetables will be grown in hothouse environments. The nutrients will be synthesized into a highly condensed injection. 29. Proteins are developed without animal meat, very powerful, builds immune system. 30. Addictions will be a thing of the past because of a brain stimulation, which eradicates all addictions, with no side effects. 31. Execution for the death penalty will become a complete vaporization of the body. 32. No separate governments, one planetary government will form. 33. Great earth changes will occur and germ warfare will be used before the world finds peace. But eventually from all of the bad comes good. The pendulum will swing back to humanity and love. 34. No world war is coming, but lots of civil disorder and small skirmishes. No nuclear holocaust. 35. Peace will last from 2050 until 2100, and then I see nothing beyond, which could mean "the end will come like a thief in the night." 36. Toward the end of things, the veil separating our world from The Other Side will thin, so much so that most people will see decease loved ones and speak with their Spirit Guides. 37. There will be many false prophets that rise up proclaiming to be Jesus on Earth, and try to lead people astray. We are already seeing this in the big rise of occultism. 38. People will again find Spirituality, not so much in organized religion, but in the spiritual brotherhood of coming together and finding their Temple within. 39. Four more comets will pass by before the end times. 40. Aliens will begin to show themselves in the year 2010, they will not harm us, they simply want to see what we are doing to this planet. They will teach us how to use anti-gravity devices again, such as they did for the pyramids.
Sylvia Browne Predictions for the Next 100 Years.....? Tell me if you believe, in a hundred years that any of these predictions can happen. I'm just laying them out to be criticized on their probability.
Depressed From Sexual Assault/Deformity. PLEASE HELP ME!? Hi all. I have been deeply depressed for a long time after a sexual assault. I contracted genital warts from it. I had them treated at Planned Parenthood with an acid treatment. The nurse put the acid over my entire genital area, instead of just on the warts. My skin turned grey then later nearly all the fatty tissue is gone. My labia majora skin sags and hangs down 4 inches. I also have deep holes in my skin. It makes me so depressed. I think about it non-stop. I want to get married one day but I don't know how I will ever be able to have sex with my husband. I just wish I never went to Planned Parenthood. It had stung for several hours after the procedure. It was the worst pain I had ever experienced. and now I know where: because it was acid that was disfiguring me! Where do I go from here? I complained to Planned Parenthood but the coordinator just looked at me and said "well you did sign the release form stating you were told the complications." I was so nervious when I went there that I signed a form that they gave me. It never listed the complications. It only stated" I have asked questions and am aware of any complications." I asked while the nurse was performing the procedure and she said that there are no side effects. She lied to me!! I have no recourse now because I signed the paper. What do I do? I am beggin gmy mom to let me have corrective surgery. I saw a plastic surgen and it's going to cost $5000. I really want to have it. What do I do? The people at PP were so rude to me. The nurse rolled her eyes at me. All I think is how that nurse disfigured me ands he doesn't even care one bit. During the procedure she said it doesn't cause any problems. But when I went in aferwards she smiled and said "Yes it can can scarring and complications." I am so depressed. I hate my genitals. I hate being a woman. Please help.
Am I A Complete Moron For Going to Planned Parenthood? I had contracted genital warts from a sexual assault. I was in denial that I had an STD for a long time....I had tiny red bumps but I just told myself that I had a yeast infection. I even went to a physician once and she told me it was just a simple yeast infection (although she didn't perform a pelvin and just glanced at it.) Then one day I noticed I actually had warts...I went into panic mode and began researching on the internet. The pictures matched exactly what I had. I went into a deep depression, worrying that I may have this forever. I went to my regular Ob/Gyn and he prescribed Aldara cream, which costs $1200. I couldn't afford it so I freaked out. In the spur of the moment I called Planned Parenthood. They fit me in that same day and I had an acid peel. I asked the nurse about risks and she said there were none....She repeatedly explained that no one ever has problems and the acid is completely safe. I ended up having another one. I asked about why my skin was so "hangy" and wrinkly, and why it appeared to lose ellasticity. Again, she said that those changes were only temporay. After the second treatment, it was much worse. My skin on my labia majora hung down 4 inches. I have severe "camel toe" and dread the thought of having to wear a bathing suit. I went to a plastic surgeon and am scheduled for corrective surgery at the end of the month. The Planned Parenthood visits cos tme about $300. The surgery will cost me $5000. I blew so much money on this. I am a full time college student with no income. I feel like a complete moron for ever going to PP. Did I have a serious lapse in judgement...Thinking I could get something for nothing? The nurse was beyond rude, telling me that I probably got the warts before the sexual assualt. (Even though I only had one consnesual partner in my life???) I am depressed. Why was I such a moron? I believe the nurse when she told me there were no side effects. They were so trashy at PP. The medical assistant actually used the word "c u m" when talking to me. It wasn't a regular consent form. It said something to the effect of "I acknowledge that the clinician has explained to me all of the risk(s), complications." It didn't explain what the risks were. Because the nurse had said that there were NO risks, I took her word for it.
I think I have self esteem issues? I'm a 22 year old female. I'd always been a chubby child and been teased about it and called names by family members and relatives. I mean you would have expected it from outsiders like other children in the playground when I was at school but I don't ever remember any of them being nasty to me about my weight, it was always my family, which hurt more I guess 'cos they're the ones you rely on and want loving from. I'm 22 now and been diagnosed with two separate hormonal conditions (hypothyroidism and PCOS) that have an effect on my metabolism/weight which makes it even harder for me to lose weight. It's really affected my self-esteem. I've always seen myself as a "fat ugly hairy girl" and I've not really had anyone tell me any different. I've hardly ever got any compliments about the way I look, so it makes it even harder for me to accept compliments. Usually they're about my personality, but I find it hard to accept them. It's affected my self esteem on the whole I think. My siblings and neices and nephews call me a "cuddly teddy bear" but I feel like a fat worthless lump of lard. Growing up I wasn't into hair or makeup or boys, etc. I wouldn't have called myself a tomboy either though. God knows how but I got into a fvcked up kinda relationship with this guy who used to tell me so much that it was always my personality and heart that matters, not my looks and that he loved me for my heart. Naturally I believed him. Then we had a fight over something so stupid and he said so many horrible and hurtful things to me about my image and weight. He broke my heart twice and I dumped him. He's in the past now. I got a new haircut (possibly my first brave hair moment) after that, it really made me feel good about myself and was like a breath of fresh air/confidence after all that sh!t with that loser, but then after a while I felt like it made me look like a man, and all my insecurities crept back in :( I don't bother with my hair now, I feel I'll always look like a man no matter what. And I feel makeup makes me look a billion times worse, makes me look fake/plastic, or like something out of a circus. I see so many of my friends around me who are gorgeous/beautiful in so many different ways. I feel like total sh!t compared to them. I have a lot of sisters and out of all of them, I'm the tallest and fattest, generally the biggest. They're all around the same dress and shoe size so they share their clothes and shoes a lot. I've never had the opportunity to do this with my sisters, unless something mum bought for me was too small for me and one of them would keep it. I booked an appointment to see the counsellor at my GP's Practice but she was half an hour late and it really pissed me off and I just walked out of the surgery... I would have liked to have seen her and talked through some of my self esteem issues but the whole time delay thing really pissed me off 'cos I had other things to do as well and I just walked straight out of the surgery. I don't know if I want to book another appointment now, I feel so let down by her already seeing as she couldn't even see me on time, without a valid reason. I feel I have low confidence and self esteem issues, and I'm not sure how to deal with them. I feel so fat and worthless. If someone tells me different, I have a really hard time accepting it. I hate myself. I started the gym last year, second month in I was getting so many compliments and WOWS from people about the loss in my weight... Then it piled back on, went back to the gym, no results. I'm now in a position where I can't afford to rejoin the gym right now. No you're right, I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me. I didn't ask this question to look for sympathy, I don't want sympathy. I'm looking for possible ways to deal with my self esteem issues.
Will check my article, say what you think? This is my homework for English class. (I'm not a native speaker) It's the first article I've ever written and I want to become a journalist so it will really help me if you correct my mistakes or just say what you think. Did it have any effect on you? I will not say the title tough I like it :D because (this is weird I know) my classmates may find it on google and copy it. ------------------------- What can make a beautiful 23-year-old girl decide to go under the knife and have 10 plastic procedures in a day? Heidi Montag was first known for taking part in the reality show The Hills. As her 15 minutes of fame were over she decided to attract people’s attention by having as many surgeries as she can. We all know that now many women like Heidi want to have parts of their bodies corrected. They are ready to do everything it takes to reach their goal but is it worth it? Why would people want to change the way they look, the way God made them? It’s always connected with complexes or in Montag’s case – insecurity and Hollywood pressure. It only proves that you can’t deal with difficulties and you’re weak. People can’t accept their age, they want to look younger and at the end it makes them look fake rather than beautiful. I can only agree with cosmetic surgeries when you want to hide a scar or other defects, which may bring back many bad memories. It seems to me that there are still quite many people who will never think of having any procedures no matter how many “perfect” people they see on magazines’ covers. These are the ones who want to be natural and real, they want to be loved for who they are. I hope you’re one of these people and if you’re not, I hope you find the strength to change this. Don’t forget – when you’re fake inside, within you, there isn’t a procedure that will make you look really beautiful.

How can people be this way? It seems that guys get a kick out of treating women like shit. If I'm talking to a guy and he says something rude to me or something that is offensive to me, i tell him to stop... But then i get called a stupid feminist whore, or something to the effect of that. Why are guys like that? I never done anything to hurt anyone. But every time I come across a group of young guys together, all they do is swear, talk about killing people, them having sex with "Chicks" with big tits (which isn't bad, but the age just keeps getting younger and younger) and negative influences in magazines that cause most kids to feel like shit about themselves. Both online and offline. I'm usually not the most open person, I hate talking to people online about this kind of stuff, because i might be judged, but I don't have anyone to turn to. I am a bit dramatic at times and I sometimes I can't write down just how I feel, but please try and bear with me? I see this everywhere. I am a peaceful creature, and I have a good sense of humour. But jokes really can go too far. Everyone is so violent... Just because I can't seem to enjoy a "make me a sammich" joke or some other offensive bull crap about how lazy and stupid mexicans/blacks are... I have a job, a very important career plan for the future and I am taking great car of my vehicle; I am mature and intelligent... but I have a lot of doubts, what is it worth if no one will listen to common sense... Maybe I am not looking at the big picture here, but I am at a young age and I am surrounded by hate, obesity, arrogance, violence, stupid twits who marry other stupid twits, tons of girls who are obsessed with plastic surgery and losing weight, having babies at very young ages, everyone wanting to do hard drugs and so on. I just want to know if anyone agrees with me.
D Does anyone else agree?

is this fine essay? The Human Obsession "Beauty is in the eye of beholder," is an unknown proverb in contemporary society. “Not guilty plea in fake plastic surgeon case.” November 19, 2004 http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/11/19/cosmetic.surgeries/ Karl Ross. “Search for Beauty Ends in Death.” 1998: 2 http://www.locateadoc.com/articles.cfm/1406/1412 http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/11/19/cosmetic.surgeries/ http://www.surgery.org/press/news-release.php?iid=363&section=news-safety

So, if you know a gal on the pill, you know someone, "on steroids." So shouldn't it also be allowed for a man to take fake testerone? And tell me this, how would women react if the government declared taking these hormones, without any medical reason, drug abuse?
why is it that most women lie on their real age? Everybody goes to this graceful end of growing old and its a blessing
Plastic surgery? Anyone out there who had cosmetic plastic surgery done on them? Do you guys feel any regret after going through it, any side effects? And do you guys actually do feel better? Just wondering because I'm not happy with my face. And please don't tell me that plastic surgery is bad and I should be happy with my face and stuff.
Is it normal for a plastic surgeon to say this? Well, a few days ago I was going into have a consultation for my lip reduction surgery. First, when he walked in he is like, some people pay to have lips look like yours. They aren't even that big! Keep in mind, my lips are huge. Way bigger than the average white persons' and a little bigger than a person with African descent. Well, he goes on to tell me that everyone has something on their body they don't like. When I become older, I'll appreciate more about my body than right now. Then he went on to explain flaws about himself. He began telling me that I was pretty and that altering my lips to make them smaller might have more bad effects than positive ones. So here I am. Without any lip reduction. Is this contradicting for a plastic surgeon to say???
Lip surgery question / lip enhancement? My friend wants to go from having what she herself calls "skinny pie- hole lizard lips" to getting heart- shaped beautiful lips, the kind that Liya Kebede, Iman, and Linda Evangelista have. She wants me to go to the plastic surgeon with her, so she can get some that look like mine.(But my lips are natural, not man made). Her lips are naturally as thin as dental floss and don't cover her teeth. But I don't want to go because I am worried they might mess her up. What if they botch her operation and her lips shrink even more or she gets bad scars?! So I am asking this question , what lip treatment can she get that will less likely to get a "messed up" after effect. Should she use collagen, restylane, fat injections or that thing with the tubes they put in the mouth. My friend, is a BEST friend, and I want her surgery to go well.
I wish I hadbigger boobs...? Seriously! I'm 20 and I'm barely a full A! It's so unfair! I mean my mom and sister have big boobs and grandmothers had big boobs. It's not that I want big boobs but I want something you know? Like at least a B or something. I seriously don't feel feminine at all cause I'm so flat chested =( Sometimes I even have trouble finding cute and good fitting clothes cause my boobs are so damn small! = ( I see 16 year olds with bigger breast then me! Is there anything I can do to get bigger boobs? I;m not gonna take and nor do I plan on taking birth control pills cause it's unsafe, will make me gain weight and has side effects. I'm not gonna gain weight either. I was thinking plastic surgery but I heard its unsafe and really painful and I really don't wanna be considered "fake", also isn't it bad in the future when you have kids and start breastfeeding? I heard that apparently there's this hormonal shot the doctor can give that makes your boobs bigger...is this true? What are the side effects? I DON'T want to gain weight...I already work hard enough at the gym to keep my body in shape lol.
Was wondering if someone would help me look over my research paper.? I was basically checking to if it flowed correctly. I'm gonna ask an english tutor to help me look over it as well but I figured I'd get as much critic as I could seeing as how this paper is my english final Also note that this paper isn't finished I still have 2 more topics to add in as well as the conclusion. “How Does the Media Influence American Society” An analysis of the media’s role in America’s society shows that some people are more inclined to base reality on the views of the famous which could stunt the growth of individuality: some follow a star’s every move while some simply go along with what the media thinks is good or bad without giving any thought for themselves. Media influence in today’s American society is somewhat of a double edge sword for society as the media covers anything on a famous person’s life, covers anything on the failure of a person’s life, anything negative gains most of the media’s attention. On the other hand, the media covers injustices done against people; although, sometimes it’s mostly done for ratings, sometimes belittling the injustice. This in turn causes one to question the moral sense of the American society and also question where our priorities as human beings lie due to the fact that most recent events in the past months such as the AIG scandals, Casey Anthony trial, etc have all been lacking moral stability. The media portrays absolute perfection and completely belittle anything but absolute perfection. Anything thing’s fair when it comes to get the next juicy tidbits of information on a famous person’s life regardless of the consequences of the actions taken. The media spreads the word and outrage of injustice. The media’s influence on the American society is to blame for the lack of ethical reasoning on recent resent events. “Perfection is the key to happiness” as noted from “Souls: Beneath and Beyond Autism” by Sharon Rosenbloom. In today’s media, the concept of perfection is implanted in our minds at a very young age, for throughout our adolescent years we are convinced that we must look and do things a certain way or risk being classified as freaks by society. Consequently, people are physically, mentally, and emotionally devastated when the realization that perfection is beyond human reach becomes painfully clear. Super models are rarely seen in plus sizes as the thinner you are the happier you are said to be, Tyra Banks’ has previously done segments about how the idea of plus size models should be given more consideration.. Super models, people young children often look up to, are usually so thin their bones are mostly visible thus sending the message that to be beautiful, successful, and happy you must be razor thin. Physical and psychological problems are developed due to the media’s one sided stand point of the body causing most girls today to have low self esteem and eventually causing some girls to act out in demeaning ways such as violence towards other people, prostitution, stealing, etc. Anorexia, bulimia, multiple personality disorder, etc occur when someone who views everything the media puts out into the public as absolute truth due to the extreme levels of stress that comes with the path to “perfection”. The bottom line is perfection is an unobtainable condition, for with time there’s the need for things to upgrade to adapt to the changes that comes with time. While strolling through forums I came across one site, surveycentral.org, that asked what some people wanted to be when they grew up, some wanted to be firefighters, police men, doctors, priest and some jokingly wanted to become their favorite animal. Today it seems that more and more children are taking after some adults of today wanting to become like famous celebs such as Riana, Chris Brown, rap artist, movie stars, etc. While there’s nothing wrong with wanting to be like another person, the degree to which one admires someone can say a lot for someone’s overall stability. Today, people are willing to do anything to get their 5 minutes of fame regardless of the consequences on their bodies or the welfare of others. In 2008, Paula Goodspeed, a former contestant on American idol, committed suicide via drug overdose outside of Paula Abdul’s home. The deceased contestant was a huge fan of the show but especially a huge fan of Paula Abdul despite being cruelly ridiculed during her audition, but friends and family however weren’t surprised buy Goodspeed’s suicide given the fact that she often stalked Paula Abdul and her writing on her MySpace page. Another case of star fever is Nadia Suleman, also known as the “octomom”, who in her alleged “accidental” rise to fame has said on more than one occasion said she idolizes Angelina Jolie having had plastic surgery done to look like Angelina. The “octomom” in April of 2009 has had her property vandalized due to the effects of her double edged fame. Today’s media causes people to envy the lives of others and hold the value of the
Do you belong to the "new Church of Global Warming"? "Aliens Cause Global Warming" A lecture by Michael Crichton California Institute of Technology Pasadena, CA January 17, 2003 My topic today sounds humorous but unfortunately I am serious. I am going to argue that extraterrestrials lie behind global warming. Or to speak more precisely, I will argue that a belief in extraterrestrials has paved the way, in a progression of steps, to a belief in global warming. Charting this progression of belief will be my task today. Let me say at once that I have no desire to discourage anyone from believing in either extraterrestrials or global warming. That would be quite impossible to do. Rather, I want to discuss the history of several widely-publicized beliefs and to point to what I consider an emerging crisis in the whole enterprise of science-namely the increasingly uneasy relationship between hard science and public policy. I have a special interest in this because of my own upbringing. I was born in the midst of World War II, and passed my formative years at the height of the Cold War. In school drills, I dutifully crawled under my desk in preparation for a nuclear attack. It was a time of widespread fear and uncertainty, but even as a child I believed that science represented the best and greatest hope for mankind. Even to a child, the contrast was clear between the world of politics-a world of hate and danger, of irrational beliefs and fears, of mass manipulation and disgraceful blots on human history. In contrast, science held different values-international in scope, forging friendships and working relationships across national boundaries and political systems, encouraging a dispassionate habit of thought, and ultimately leading to fresh knowledge and technology that would benefit all mankind. The world might not be avery good place, but science would make it better. And it did. In my lifetime, science has largely fulfilled its promise. Science has been the great intellectual adventure of our age, and a great hope for our troubled and restless world. But I did not expect science merely to extend lifespan, feed the hungry, cure disease, and shrink the world with jets and cell phones. I also expected science to banish the evils of human thought---prejudice and superstition, irrational beliefs and false fears. I expected science to be, in Carl Sagan's memorable phrase, "a candle in a demon haunted world." And here, I am not so pleased with the impact of science. Rather than serving as a cleansing force, science has in some instances been seduced by the more ancient lures of politics and publicity. Some of the demons that haunt our world in recent years are invented by scientists. The world has not benefited from permitting these demons to escape free. But let's look at how it came to pass. Cast your minds back to 1960. John F. Kennedy is president, commercial jet airplanes are just appearing, the biggest university mainframes have 12K of memory. And in Green Bank, West Virginia at the new National Radio Astronomy Observatory, a young astrophysicist named Frank Drake runs a two week project called Ozma, to search for extraterrestrial signals. A signal is received, to great excitement. It turns out to be false, but the excitement remains. In 1960, Drake organizes the first SETI conference, and came up with the now-famous Drake equation: N=N*fp ne fl fi fc fL Where N is the number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy; fp is the fraction with planets; ne is the number of planets per star capable of supporting life; fl is the fraction of planets where life evolves; fi is the fraction where intelligent life evolves; and fc is the fraction that communicates; and fL is the fraction of the planet's life during which the communicating civilizations live. This serious-looking equation gave SETI an serious footing as a legitimate intellectual inquiry. The problem, of course, is that none of the terms can be known, and most cannot even be estimated. The only way to work the equation is to fill in with guesses. And guesses-just so we're clear-are merely expressions of prejudice. Nor can there be "informed guesses." If you need to state how many planets with life choose to communicate, there is simply no way to make an informed guess. It's simply prejudice. As a result, the Drake equation can have any value from "billions and billions" to zero. An expression that can mean anything means nothing. Speaking precisely, the Drake equation is literally meaningless, and has nothing to do with science. I take the hard view that science involves the creation of testable hypotheses. The Drake equation cannot be tested and therefore SETI is not science. SETI is unquestionably a religion. Faith is defined as the firm belief in something for which there is no proof. The belief that the Koran is the word of God is a matter of faith. The belief that God created the universe in seven days is a matter of faith. The belief that there are other life forms in the universe is a matter of faith. There is not a single shred of evidence for any other life forms, and in forty years of searching, none has been discovered. There is absolutely no evidentiary reason to maintain this belief. SETI is a religion. One way to chart the cooling of enthusiasm is to review popular works on the subject. In 1964, at the height of SETI enthusiasm, Walter Sullivan of the NY Times wrote an exciting book about life in the universe entitled WE ARE NOT ALONE. By 1995, when Paul Davis wrote a book on the same subject, he titled it ARE WE ALONE? ( Since 1981, there have in fact been four books titled ARE WE ALONE.) More recently we have seen the rise of the so-called "Rare Earth" theory which suggests that we may, in fact, be all alone. Again, there is no evidence either way. Back in the sixties, SETI had its critics, although not among astrophysicists and astronomers. The biologists and paleontologists were harshest. George Gaylord Simpson of Harvard sneered that SETI was a "study without a subject," and it remains so to the present day. But scientists in general have been indulgent toward SETI, viewing it either with bemused tolerance, or with indifference. After all, what's the big deal? It's kind of fun. If people want to look, let them. Only a curmudgeon would speak harshly of SETI. It wasn't worth the bother. And of course it is true that untestable theories may have heuristic value. Of course extraterrestrials are a good way to teach science to kids. But that does not relieve us of the obligation to see the Drake equation clearly for what it is-pure speculation in quasi-scientific trappings. The fact that the Drake equation was not greeted with screams of outrage-similar to the screams of outrage that greet each Creationist new claim, for example-meant that now there was a crack in the door, a loosening of the definition of what constituted legitimate scientific procedure. And soon enough, pernicious garbage began to squeeze through the cracks. Now let's jump ahead a decade to the 1970s, and Nuclear Winter. In 1975, the National Academy of Sciences reported on "Long-Term Worldwide Effects of Multiple Nuclear Weapons Detonations" but the report estimated the effect of dust from nuclear blasts to be relatively minor. In 1979, the Office of Technology Assessment issued a report on "The Effects of Nuclear War" and stated that nuclear war could perhaps produce irreversible adverse consequences on the environment. However, because the scientific processes involved were poorly understood, the report stated it was not possible to estimate the probable magnitude of such damage. Three years later, in 1982, the Swedish Academy of Sciences commissioned a report entitled "The Atmosphere after a Nuclear War: Twilight at Noon," which attempted to quantify the effect of smoke from burning forests and cities. The authors speculated that there would be so much smoke that a large cloud over the northern hemisphere would reduce incoming sunlight below the level required for photosynthesis, and that this would last for weeks or even longer. The following year, five scientists including Richard Turco and Carl Sagan published a paper in Science called "Nuclear Winter: Global Consequences of Multiple Nuclear Explosions." This was the so-called TTAPS report, which attempted to quantify more rigorously the atmospheric effects, with the added credibility to be gained from an actual computer model of climate. At the heart of the TTAPS undertaking was another equation, never specifically expressed, but one that could be paraphrased as follows: Ds = Wn Ws Wh Tf Tb Pt Pr Pe… etc (The amount of tropospheric dust=# warheads x size warheads x warhead detonation height x flammability of targets x Target burn duration x Particles entering the Troposphere x Particle reflectivity x Particle endurance…and so on.) The similarity to the Drake equation is striking. As with the Drake equation, none of the variables can be determined. None at all. The TTAPS study addressed this problem in part by mapping out different wartime scenarios and assigning numbers to some of the variables, but even so, the remaining variables were-and are-simply unknowable. Nobody knows how much smoke will be generated when cities burn, creating particles of what kind, and for how long. No one knows the effect of local weather conditions on the amount of particles that will be injected into the troposphere. No one knows how long the particles will remain in the troposphere. And so on. And remember, this is only four years after the OTA study concluded that the underlying scientific processes were so poorly known that no estimates could be reliably made. Nevertheless, the TTAPS study not only made those estimates, but concluded they were catastrophic. According to Sagan and his coworkers, even a limited 5,000 megaton nuclear exchange would cause a global temperature drop of more than 35 degrees Centigrade, and this change would last for three months. The greatest volcanic eruptions that we know of changed world temperatures somewhere between .5 and 2 degrees Centigrade. Ice ages changed global temperatures by 10 degrees. Here we have an estimated change three times greater than any ice age. One might expect it to be the subject of some dispute. But Sagan and his coworkers were prepared, for nuclear winter was from the outset the subject of a well-orchestrated media campaign. The first announcement of nuclear winter appeared in an article by Sagan in the Sunday supplement, Parade. The very next day, a highly-publicized, high-profile conference on the long-term consequences of nuclear war was held in Washington, chaired by Carl Sagan and Paul Ehrlich, the most famous and media-savvy scientists of their generation. Sagan appeared on the Johnny Carson show 40 times. Ehrlich was on 25 times. Following the conference, there were press conferences, meetings with congressmen, and so on. The formal papers in Science came months later. This is not the way science is done, it is the way products are sold. The real nature of the conference is indicated by these artists' renderings of the the effect of nuclear winter. I cannot help but quote the caption for figure 5: "Shown here is a tranquil scene in the north woods. A beaver has just completed its dam, two black bears forage for food, a swallow-tailed butterfly flutters in the foreground, a loon swims quietly by, and a kingfisher searches for a tasty fish." Hard science if ever there was. At the conference in Washington, during the question period, Ehrlich was reminded that after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, scientists were quoted as saying nothing would grow there for 75 years, but in fact melons were growing the next year. So, he was asked, how accurate were these findings now? Ehrlich answered by saying "I think they are extremely robust. Scientists may have made statements like that, although I cannot imagine what their basis would have been, even with the state of science at that time, but scientists are always making absurd statements, individually, in various places. What we are doing here, however, is presenting a consensus of a very large group of scientists…" I want to pause here and talk about this notion of consensus, and the rise of what has been called consensus science. I regard consensus science as an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you're being had. Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus. There is no such thing as consensus science. If it's consensus, it isn't science. If it's science, it isn't consensus. Period. In addition, let me remind you that the track record of the consensus is nothing to be proud of. Let's review a few cases. In past centuries, the greatest killer of women was fever following childbirth . One woman in six died of this fever. In 1795, Alexander Gordon of Aberdeen suggested that the fevers were infectious processes, and he was able to cure them. The consensus said no. In 1843, Oliver Wendell Holmes claimed puerperal fever was contagious, and presented compellng evidence. The consensus said no. In 1849, Semmelweiss demonstrated that sanitary techniques virtually eliminated puerperal fever in hospitals under his management. The consensus said he was a Jew, ignored him, and dismissed him from his post. There was in fact no agreement on puerperal fever until the start of the twentieth century. Thus the consensus took one hundred and twenty five years to arrive at the right conclusion despite the efforts of the prominent "skeptics" around the world, skeptics who were demeaned and ignored. And despite the constant ongoing deaths of women. There is no shortage of other examples. In the 1920s in America, tens of thousands of people, mostly poor, were dying of a disease called pellagra. The consensus of scientists said it was infectious, and what was necessary was to find the "pellagra germ." The US government asked a brilliant young investigator, Dr. Joseph Goldberger, to find the cause. Goldberger concluded that diet was the crucial factor. The consensus remained wedded to the germ theory. Goldberger demonstrated that he could induce the disease through diet. He demonstrated that the disease was not infectious by injecting the blood of a pellagra patient into himself, and his assistant. They and other volunteers swabbed their noses with swabs from pellagra patients, and swallowed capsules containing scabs from pellagra rashes in what were called "Goldberger's filth parties." Nobody contracted pellagra. The consensus continued to disagree with him. There was, in addition, a social factor-southern States disliked the idea of poor diet as the cause, because it meant that social reform was required. They continued to deny it until the 1920s. Result-despite a twentieth century epidemic, the consensus took years to see the light. Probably every schoolchild notices that South America and Africa seem to fit together rather snugly, and Alfred Wegener proposed, in 1912, that the continents had in fact drifted apart. The consensus sneered at continental drift for fifty years. The theory was most vigorously denied by the great names of geology-until 1961, when it began to seem as if the sea floors were spreading. The result: it took the consensus fifty years to acknowledge what any schoolchild sees. And shall we go on? The examples can be multiplied endlessly. Jenner and smallpox, Pasteur and germ theory. Saccharine, margarine, repressed memory, fiber and colon cancer, hormone replacement therap6y…the list of consensus errors goes on and on. Finally, I would remind you to notice where the claim of consensus is invoked. Consensus is invoked only in situations where the science is not solid enough. Nobody says the consensus of scientists agrees that E=mc2. Nobody says the consensus is that the sun is 93 million miles away. It would never occur to anyone to speak that way. But back to our main subject. What I have been suggesting to you is that nuclear winter was a meaningless formula, tricked out with bad science, for policy ends. It was political from the beginning, promoted in a well-orchestrated media campaign that had to be planned weeks or months in advance. Further evidence of the political nature of the whole project can be found in the response to criticism. Although Richard Feynman was characteristically blunt, saying, "I really don't think these guys know what they're talking about," other prominent scientists were noticeably reticent. Freeman Dyson was quoted as saying "It's an absolutely atrocious piece of science but…who wants to be accused of being in favor of nuclear war?" And Victor Weisskopf said, "The science is terrible but---perhaps the psychology is good." The nuclear winter team followed up the publication of such comments with letters to the editors denying that these statements were ever made, though the scientists since then have subsequently confirmed their views. At the time, there was a concerted desire on the part of lots of people to avoid nuclear war. If nuclear winter looked awful, why investigate too closely? Who wanted to disagree? Only people like Edward Teller, the "father of the H bomb." Teller said, "While it is generally recognized that details are still uncertain and deserve much more study, Dr. Sagan nevertheless has taken the position that the whole scenario is so robust that there can be little doubt about its main conclusions." Yet for most people, the fact that nuclear winter was a scenario riddled with uncertainties did not seem to be relevant. I say it is hugely relevant. Once you abandon strict adherence to what science tells us, once you start arranging the truth in a press conference, then anything is possible. In one context, maybe you will get some mobilization against nuclear war. But in another context, you get Lysenkoism. In another, you get Nazi euthanasia. The danger is always there, if you subvert science to political ends. That is why it is so important for the future of science that the line between what science can say with certainty, and what it cannot, be drawn clearly-and defended. What happened to Nuclear Winter? As the media glare faded, its robust scenario appeared less persuasive; John Maddox, editor of Nature, repeatedly criticized its claims; within a year, Stephen Schneider, one of the leading figures in the climate model, began to speak of "nuclear autumn." It just didn't have the same ring. A final media embarrassment came in 1991, when Carl Sagan predicted on Nightline that Kuwaiti oil fires would produce a nuclear winter effect, causing a "year without a summer," and endangering crops around the world. Sagan stressed this outcome was so likely that "it should affect the war plans." None of it happened. What, then, can we say were the lessons of Nuclear Winter? I believe the lesson was that with a catchy name, a strong policy position and an aggressive media campaign, nobody will dare to criticize the science, and in short order, a terminally weak thesis will be established as fact. After that, any criticism becomes beside the point. The war is already over without a shot being fired. That was the lesson, and we had a textbook application soon afterward, with second hand smoke. In 1993, the EPA announced that second-hand smoke was "responsible for approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths each year in nonsmoking adults," and that it " impairs the respiratory health of hundreds of thousands of people." In a 1994 pamphlet the EPA said that the eleven studies it based its decision on were not by themselves conclusive, and that they collectively assigned second-hand smoke a risk factor of 1.19. (For reference, a risk factor below 3.0 is too small for action by the EPA. or for publication in the New England Journal of Medicine, for example.) Furthermore, since there was no statistical association at the 95% confidence limits, the EPA lowered the limit to 90%. They then classified second hand smoke as a Group A Carcinogen. This was openly fraudulent science, but it formed the basis for bans on smoking in restaurants, offices, and airports. California banned public smoking in 1995. Soon, no claim was too extreme. By 1998, the Christian Science Monitor was saying that "Second-hand smoke is the nation's third-leading preventable cause of death." The American Cancer Society announced that 53,000 people died each year of second-hand smoke. The evidence for this claim is nonexistent. In 1998, a Federal judge held that the EPA had acted improperly, had "committed to a conclusion before research had begun", and had "disregarded information and made findings on selective information." The reaction of Carol Browner, head of the EPA was: "We stand by our science….there's wide agreement. The American people certainly recognize that exposure to second hand smoke brings…a whole host of health problems." Again, note how the claim of consensus trumps science. In this case, it isn't even a consensus of scientists that Browner evokes! It's the consensus of the American people. Meanwhile, ever-larger studies failed to confirm any association. A large, seven-country WHO study in 1998 found no association. Nor have well-controlled subsequent studies, to my knowledge. Yet we now read, for example, that second hand smoke is a cause of breast cancer. At this point you can say pretty much anything you want about second-hand smoke. As with nuclear winter, bad science is used to promote what most people would consider good policy. I certainly think it is. I don't want people smoking around me. So who will speak out against banning second-hand smoke? Nobody, and if you do, you'll be branded a shill of RJ Reynolds. A big tobacco flunky. But the truth is that we now have a social policy supported by the grossest of superstitions. And we've given the EPA a bad lesson in how to behave in the future. We've told them that cheating is the way to succeed. As the twentieth century drew to a close, the connection between hard scientific fact and public policy became increasingly elastic. In part this was possible because of the complacency of the scientific profession; in part because of the lack of good science education among the public; in part, because of the rise of specialized advocacy groups which have been enormously effective in getting publicity and shaping policy; and in great part because of the decline of the media as an independent assessor of fact. The deterioration of the American media is dire loss for our country. When distinguished institutions like the New York Times can no longer differentiate between factual content and editorial opinion, but rather mix both freely on their front page, then who will hold anyone to a higher standard? And so, in this elastic anything-goes world where science-or non-science-is the hand maiden of questionable public policy, we arrive at last at global warming. It is not my purpose here to rehash the details of this most magnificent of the demons haunting the world. I would just remind you of the now-familiar pattern by which these things are established. Evidentiary uncertainties are glossed over in the unseemly rush for an overarching policy, and for grants to support the policy by delivering findings that are desired by the patron. Next, the isolation of those scientists who won't get with the program, and the characterization of those scientists as outsiders and "skeptics" in quotation marks-suspect individuals with suspect motives, industry flunkies, reactionaries, or simply anti-environmental nutcases. In short order, debate ends, even though prominent scientists are uncomfortable about how things are being done. When did "skeptic" become a dirty word in science? When did a skeptic require quotation marks around it? To an outsider, the most significant innovation in the global warming controversy is the overt reliance that is being placed on models. Back in the days of nuclear winter, computer models were invoked to add weight to a conclusion: "These results are derived with the help of a computer model." But now large-scale computer models are seen as generating data in themselves. No longer are models judged by how well they reproduce data from the real world-increasingly, models provide the data. As if they were themselves a reality. And indeed they are, when we are projecting forward. There can be no observational data about the year 2100. There are only model runs. This fascination with computer models is something I understand very well. Richard Feynmann called it a disease. I fear he is right. Because only if you spend a lot of time looking at a computer screen can you arrive at the complex point where the global warming debate now stands. Nobody believes a weather prediction twelve hours ahead. Now we're asked to believe a prediction that goes out 100 years into the future? And make financial investments based on that prediction? Has everybody lost their minds? Stepping back, I have to say the arrogance of the modelmakers is breathtaking. There have been, in every century, scientists who say they know it all. Since climate may be a chaotic system-no one is sure-these predictions are inherently doubtful, to be polite. But more to the point, even if the models get the science spot-on, they can never get the sociology. To predict anything about the world a hundred years from now is simply absurd. Look: If I was selling stock in a company that I told you would be profitable in 2100, would you buy it? Or would you think the idea was so crazy that it must be a scam? Let's think back to people in 1900 in, say, New York. If they worried about people in 2000, what would they worry about? Probably: Where would people get enough horses? And what would they do about all the horseshit? Horse pollution was bad in 1900, think how much worse it would be a century later, with so many more people riding horses? But of course, within a few years, nobody rode horses except for sport. And in 2000, France was getting 80% its power from an energy source that was unknown in 1900. Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Japan were getting more than 30% from this source, unknown in 1900. Remember, people in 1900 didn't know what an atom was. They didn't know its structure. They also didn't know what a radio was, or an airport, or a movie, or a television, or a computer, or a cell phone, or a jet, an antibiotic, a rocket, a satellite, an MRI, ICU, IUD, IBM, IRA, ERA, EEG, EPA, IRS, DOD, PCP, HTML, internet. interferon, instant replay, remote sensing, remote control, speed dialing, gene therapy, gene splicing, genes, spot welding, heat-seeking, bipolar, prozac, leotards, lap dancing, email, tape recorder, CDs, airbags, plastic explosive, plastic, robots, cars, liposuction, transduction, superconduction, dish antennas, step aerobics, smoothies, twelve-step, ultrasound, nylon, rayon, teflon, fiber optics, carpal tunnel, laser surgery, laparoscopy, corneal transplant, kidney transplant, AIDS… None of this would have meant anything to a person in the year 1900. They wouldn't know what you are talking about. Now. You tell me you can predict the world of 2100. Tell me it's even worth thinking about. Our models just carry the present into the future. They're bound to be wrong. Everybody who gives a moment's thought knows it. I remind you that in the lifetime of most scientists now living, we have already had an example of dire predictions set aside by new technology. I refer to the green revolution. In 1960, Paul Ehrlich said, "The battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s the world will undergo famines-hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death." Ten years later, he predicted four billion people would die during the 1980s, including 65 million Americans. The mass starvation that was predicted never occurred, and it now seems it isn't ever going to happen. Nor is the population explosion going to reach the numbers predicted even ten years ago. In 1990, climate modelers anticipated a world population of 11 billion by 2100. Today, some people think the correct number will be 7 billion and falling. But nobody knows for sure. But it is impossible to ignore how closely the history of global warming fits on the previous template for nuclear winter. Just as the earliest studies of nuclear winter stated that the uncertainties were so great that probabilites could never be known, so, too the first pronouncements on global warming argued strong limits on what could be determined with certainty about climate change. The 1995 IPCC draft report said, "Any claims of positive detection of significant climate change are likely to remain controversial until uncertainties in the total natural variability of the climate system are reduced." It also said, "No study to date has positively attributed all or part of observed climate changes to anthropogenic causes." Those statements were removed, and in their place appeared: "The balance of evidence suggests a discernable human influence on climate." What is clear, however, is that on this issue, science and policy have become inextricably mixed to the point where it will be difficult, if not impossible, to separate them out. It is possible for an outside observer to ask serious questions about the conduct of investigations into global warming, such as whether we are taking appropriate steps to improve the quality of our observational data records, whether we are systematically obtaining the information that will clarify existing uncertainties, whether we have any organized disinterested mechanism to direct research in this contentious area. The answer to all these questions is no. We don't. In trying to think about how these questions can be resolved, it occurs to me that in the progression from SETI to nuclear winter to second hand smoke to global warming, we have one clear message, and that is that we can expect more and more problems of public policy dealing with technical issues in the future-problems of ever greater seriousness, where people care passionately on all sides. And at the moment we have no mechanism to get good answers. So I will propose one. Just as we have established a tradition of double-blinded research to determine drug efficacy, we must institute double-blinded research in other policy areas as well. Certainly the increased use of computer models, such as GCMs, cries out for the separation of those who make the models from those who verify them. The fact is that the present structure of science is entrepeneurial, with individual investigative teams vying for funding from organizations which all too often have a clear stake in the outcome of the research-or appear to, which may be just as bad. This is not healthy for science. Sooner or later, we must form an independent research institute in this country. It must be funded by industry, by government, and by private philanthropy, both individuals and trusts. The money must be pooled, so that investigators do not know who is paying them. The institute must fund more than one team to do research in a particular area, and the verification of results will be a foregone requirement: teams will know their results will be checked by other groups. In many cases, those who decide how to gather the data will not gather it, and those who gather the data will not analyze it. If we were to address the land temperature records with such rigor, we would be well on our way to an understanding of exactly how much faith we can place in global warming, and therefore what seriousness we must address this. I believe that as we come to the end of this litany, some of you may be saying, well what is the big deal, really. So we made a few mistakes. So a few scientists have overstated their cases and have egg on their faces. So what. Well, I'll tell you. In recent years, much has been said about the post modernist claims about science to the effect that science is just another form of raw power, tricked out in special claims for truth-seeking and objectivity that really have no basis in fact. Science, we are told, is no better than any other undertaking. These ideas anger many scientists, and they anger me. But recent events have made me wonder if they are correct. We can take as an example the scientific reception accorded a Danish statistician, Bjorn Lomborg, who wrote a book called The Skeptical Environmentalist. The scientific community responded in a way that can only be described as disgraceful. In professional literature, it was complained he had no standing because he was not an earth scientist. His publisher, Cambridge University Press, was attacked with cries that the editor should be fired, and that all right-thinking scientists should shun the press. The past president of the AAAS wondered aloud how Cambridge could have ever "published a book that so clearly could never have passed peer review." )But of course the manuscript did pass peer review by three earth scientists on both sides of the Atlantic, and all recommended publication.) But what are scientists doing attacking a press? Is this the new McCarthyism-coming from scientists? Worst of all was the behavior of the Scientific American, which seemed intent on proving the post-modernist point that it was all about power, not facts. The Scientific American attacked Lomborg for eleven pages, yet only came up with nine factual errors despite their assertion that the book was "rife with careless mistakes." It was a poor display featuring vicious ad hominem attacks, including comparing him to a Holocust denier. The issue was captioned: "Science defends itself against the Skeptical Environmentalist." Really. Science has to defend itself? Is this what we have come to? When Lomborg asked for space to rebut his critics, he was given only a page and a half. When he said it wasn't enough, he put the critics' essays on his web page and answered them in detail. Scientific American threatened copyright infringement and made him take the pages down. Further attacks since have made it clear what is going on. Lomborg is charged with heresy. That's why none of his critics needs to substantiate their attacks in any detail. That's why the facts don't matter. That's why they can attack him in the most vicious personal terms. He's a heretic. Of course, any scientist can be charged as Galileo was charged. I just never thought I'd see the Scientific American in the role of mother church. Is this what science has become? I hope not. But it is what it will become, unless there is a concerted effort by leading scientists to aggressively separate science from policy. The late Philip Handler, former president of the National Academy of Sciences, said that "Scientists best serve public policy by living within the ethics of science, not those of politics. If the scientific community will not unfrock the charlatans, the public will not discern the difference-science and the nation will suffer." Personally, I don't worry about the nation. But I do worry about science. Thank you very much.
does anyone want to read this ( i know its so wierd but maybe any yahooligans here wanted to see it ) caution! The Basics Where does fart gas come from? The gas in our intestines comes from several sources: air we swallow, gas seeping into our intestines from our blood, gas produced by chemical reactions in our guts, and gas produced by bacteria living in our guts. What is fart gas made of? The composition of fart gas is highly variable. Most of the air we swallow, especially the oxygen component, is absorbed by the body before the gas gets into the intestines. By the time the air reaches the large intestine, most of what is left is nitrogen. Chemical reactions between stomach acid and intestinal fluids may produce carbon dioxide, which is also a component of air and a product of bacterial action. Bacteria also produce hydrogen and methane. But the relative proportions of these gases that emerge from our anal opening depend on several factors: what we ate, how much air we swallowed, what kinds of bacteria we have in our intestines, and how long we hold in the fart. The longer a fart is held in, the larger the proportion of boring, inert nitrogen it contains, because the other gases tend to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the walls of the intestine. A nervous person who swallows a lot of air and who moves stuff through his digestive system rapidly may have a lot of oxygen in his farts, because his body didn't have time to absorb the oxygen. Encyclopaedia Britannica offers the intriguing statement that some people's farts contain no methane. The reason for this is apparently unknown. Some researchers suspect a genetic influence, whereas others think the anomaly is due to environmental factors. However, all methane in any farts comes from bacterial action and not from human cells. What makes farts stink? The odor of farts comes from small amounts of hydrogen sulfide gas and mercaptans in the mixture. These compounds contain sulfur. The more sulfur-rich your diet, the more sulfides and mercaptans will be produced by the bacteria in your guts, and the more your farts will stink. Foods such as cauliflower, eggs and meat are notorious for producing smelly farts, whereas beans produce large amounts of not particularly stinky farts. Why do farts make noise? The sounds are produced by vibrations of the anal opening. Sounds depend on the velocity of expulsion of the gas and the tightness of the sphincter muscles of the anus. How much gas does a normal person pass per day? On average, a person produces about half a liter of fart gas per day, distributed over an average of about fourteen daily farts. Whereas it may be difficult for you to determine your daily flatus volume, you can certainly keep track of your daily numerical fart count. You might try this as a science fair project: Keep a journal of everything you eat and a count of your farts. You might make a note of the potency of their odor as well. See if you can discover a relationship between what you eat, how much you fart, and how much they smell. How does a fart travel to the anus? One may wonder why fart gas travels downward toward the anus when gas has a lower density than liquids and solids, and should therefore travel upwards. The intestine squeezes its contents toward the anus in a series of contractions, a process called peristalsis. The process is stimulated by eating, which is why we often need to poop and fart right after a meal. Peristalsis creates a zone of high pressure, forcing all intestinal contents, gas included, to move towards a region of lower pressure, which is toward the anus. Gas is more mobile than other components, and small bubbles coalesce to from larger bubbles en route to the exit. When peristalsis is not active, gas bubbles may begin to percolate upwards again, but they won't get very far due to the complicated and convoluted shape of the intestine. Furthermore, the anus is neither up nor down when a person is lying down. How long does it take fart gas to travel to someone else's nose? Fart travel time depends on atmospheric conditions such as humidity, temperature and wind speed and direction, the molecular weight of the fart particles, and the distance between the fart transmitter and the fart receiver. Farts also disperse (spread out) as they leave the source, and their potency diminishes with dilution. Generally, if the fart is not detected within a few seconds, it will be too dilute for perception and will be lost into the atmosphere forever. Exceptional conditions exist when the fart is released into a small enclosed area such as an elevator, a small room, or a car. These conditions limit the amount of dilution possible, and the fart may remain in a smellable concentration for a long period of time, until it condenses on the walls. Why is there a 13 to 20 second delay between farting and the time it starts to smell? Actually, the fart stinks immediately upon emergence, but it takes several seconds for the odor to travel to the farter's nostrils. If farts could travel at the speed of sound, we would smell them almost instantly, at the same time we hear them. Is it true that some people never fart? No, not if they're alive. People even fart shortly after death. Do even movie stars fart? Yes, of course. So do grandmothers, priests, kings, presidents, opera singers, beauty queens, and nuns. Even Yoda farts. Do men fart more than women? No, women fart just as much as men. It's just that most men take more pride in it than most women. There is a large variation among individuals in the amount of fart gas produced per day, but the variation does not correlate with gender. I have read that men fart more often than women. If this is true, then women must be saving it up and expelling more gas per fart than men do. Do men's farts smell worse than women's farts? Based on what I have experienced of women's farts, all I can say is that I hope not. At what time of day is a gentleman most likely to fart? A gentleman is mostly likely to fart first thing in the morning, while in the bathroom. This is known as "morning thunder," and if the gentleman gets good resonance, it can be heard throughout the household. Why are beans so notorious for making people fart? Beans contain sugars that we humans cannot digest. When these sugars reach our intestines, the bacteria go wild, have a big feast, and make lots of gas! Other notorious fart-producing foods include corn, bell peppers, cabbage, milk, and raisins. A friend of mine had a dog who was exceptionally fond of apples and turnips. The dog would eat these things and then get prodigious gas. A dog's digestive system is not equipped to handle such vegetable matter, so the dog's bacteria worked overtime to produce remarkable flatulence. What things other than diet can make a person fart more than usual? People who swallow a lot of air fart more than people who don't. This can be cured somewhat by chewing with your mouth closed. Nervous people with fast moving bowels will fart more because less air is absorbed out of the intestines. Some disease conditions can cause excess flatulence. And going up in an airplane or other low-pressure environment can cause the gas inside you to expand and emerge as flatulence. Is a fart really just a burp that comes out the wrong end? No, a burp emerges from the stomach and has a different chemical composition from a fart. Farts have less atmospheric gas content and more bacterial gas content than burps. Is it harmful to hold in farts? There are differences in opinion on this one. Certainly, people have believed for centuries that retaining flatulence is bad for the health. Emperor Claudius even passed a law legalizing farting at banquets out of concern for people's health. There was a widespread belief that a person could be poisoned or catch a disease by retaining farts. Doctors I have spoken to recently have told me that there is no particular harm in holding in farts. Farts will not poison you; they are a natural component of your intestinal contents. The worst thing that can happen is that you may get a stomach ache from the gas pressure. But one doctor suggested that pathological distention of the bowel could result if a person holds in farts too much. How long would it be possible to not fart? As I understand it, a captive fart can escape as soon as the person relaxes. This means that a lot of people who assiduously refrain from farting during the day do so at great length as soon as they fall asleep. Having been on a great many overnight field trips, long bus trips, and trans-Pacific flights, I can personally vouch for the fact that lots of people do fart voluminously as they doze off. So the answer to the question would be, you can refrain from farting as long as you can stay awake! Do all people fart in their sleep? I have not made a scientific study of this, but I don't think all people fart in their sleep. I think mainly those who refuse to fart when they're awake do so when dozing off. For other people, toilet training takes such a strong hold that they let nothing pass their sphincters in sleep. For these people, the gas accumlates in the night and they vent it upon awakening. Where do farts go when you hold them in? How often have you held in a fart, intending to release it at the first appropriate opportunity, only to find that the fart has disappeared when you are ready for it? I asked several doctors where the fart goes. Does it leak out slowly without the person knowing it? Is it absorbed into the bloodstream? What happens to it? The doctors agree that the fart is neither released nor absorbed. It simply migrates back upward into the intestine and comes out later. It is reassuring to know that such farts aren't really lost, just delayed. How can one cover up a fart? There is a company called Fartypants that sells underwear designed to absorb the odor of farts. If you should be caught without your Fartypants, another ploy is to blame the dog or cat, if one should be present, or complain about how the wind must be blowing from the direction of the paper mill. As for the sound... if you are in a large group of people, act oblivious and innocent, or glance quickly at the person next to you, as if you think he/she did it. Other strategies include coughing or suddenly moving your chair so that people think that they misheard the fart. If you are with one other person, you can act as if nothing happened, and the other person may believe he was mistaken in thinking he heard a fart. CJT addresses the problem of farting loudly in a public restroom as follows: "My solution: use a handful of loose toilet paper, cover your butt hole and it will muffle the farting; my friends and I call it the 'Buff Muff'!" Depending upon the company, another strategy is not to cover it up, but to proudly proclaim the fart as your own grand accomplishment and to issue a challenge to the others to outdo that one if they think they can. Is it really possible to ignite farts? The answer to that is yes! However, you should be aware that people get injured igniting flatulence. Not only can the flame back up into your colon, but your clothing or other surroundings may catch on fire. A survey done by Fartcloud (the site, alas! is not more) indicates that about a quarter of the people who ignited their farts got burned doing it. Ignition of flatulence is a hazardous practice. However, if you want to try it, and you don't have a friend to light your fart for you, you might find it easier to accomplish the job using the Fartlighter. There have also been cases in which intestinal gases with a higher than normal oxygen content have exploded during surgery when electric cautery was used by the surgeon. Why is it possible to burn farts? Farts burn because they contain methane (usually) and hydrogen, both of which are flammable gases. (Hydrogen was the same gas that was used in the ill fated Hindenburg dirigible.) Farts tend to burn with a blue or yellow flame. Is it possible to light a match with a fart? No, even strike-anywhere matches have their limits, unless the fart has the consistency of sandpaper! Any fart that rough I would hesitate to call a fart. Also, farts have the same temperature as the body from which they emerge, and aren't hot enough to initiate combustion. Are there any books about farting? There are several! My favorite is the new book, Who Cut the Cheese: A Cultural History of the Fart by Jim Dawson. This book provides an entertaining and thought-provoking history of the fart in literature, language and society. It is very informative and very funny! Ben Franklin's classic Fart Proudly is still in print. There is a collection of suggestive photographs called Who Farted Now by St. Martin's Press. Most of the photos come from old movies and political shots. For children, we have the famous The Gas We Pass : The Story of Farts by Shinta Cho, and Amanda Mayer Stinchecum (Translator), and the Canadian picture book, Good Families Don't, by Alan Daniel and Robert N. Munsch, about a highly visible fart infesting a proper middle class family. Is it possible for a talented person to earn a living through flatulence? Few people earn their living directly via flatulence. But a friend of mine says that he saw a carnival act in which the performer whistled tunes with his farts, blew out candles on the opposite side of the stage, and sent flames all the way across the stage. A famous performer who earned his living this way was Le Petomane, who performed in France at the beginning of the 20th Century. However, my friend isn't old enough to have seen Le Petomane, so maybe he had a chance to see Mr. Methane. Mr. Methane lays claim to the distinction of being the world's only performing flatulist. His CD can be purchased at the FartMart. However, people may also earn a living through the prevention of flatulence (as do the manufacturers and sellers of Beano and other products), through the practice of medicine specializing in the treatment of flatulence and other gastrointestinal problems, by writing books about flatulence (see the question before this one), and through the production and sales of various fart gags such as whoopee cushions and farts in a can. Fartypants sells a fart filter and a number of other fart-related products. Ultratech Products, Inc., sells the Flatulence Filter, "an activated carbon air filter disguised as a seat cushion." (This link was discovered by Steve of Boulder, CO.) Maybe, if you're lucky, you'll be able to find a copy of Le Petomane's biography by searching at alibris.com. Last time I checked, they had two copies available! What other fart products are available? You can visit the FartMart to obtain an astounding number of wonderful fart products, including the famous Crepitation Contest CD, and several other recordings, Pull-My-Finger Fred (a doll that responds with farts and wisecracks), whoopie cushions and a variety of other fart-noise generating products (some of which are quite high tech), some products which produce a fart-like odor, prosthetic poop, fart sludge, and the famous Fart Machine. Why do dog and cat farts smell so bad? A carnivore's protein-rich diet produces relatively small amounts of intensely stinky gas because proteins contain lots of sulfur. A dog's or cat's farts are rarely audible, but the odor is overwhelming. I have asked biologists why dogs and cats generally fart silently, and their theories include: (1) the amount of gas produced is small, but potent, (2) the horizontal orientation of their gastrointestinal system puts less pressure on the anal opening, so the gas is expelled more slowly, (3) their anal sphincters don't close as tightly as humans' because it takes less force to hold in the contents of the colon -- again because of the horizontal orientation of the gastrointestinal system -- and a loose anus makes less sound, and, my favorite (4) dogs and cats don't feel embarrassed about farting, so their sphincters are more relaxed, leading to less noisy flatulence. Mike F. points out that many dog foods are soy-based, so on top of all the above factors, add beans and stand back! Large herbivorous animals such as cows, horses and elephants, on the other hand, produce vast quantities of relatively non-stinky fart gas. The farts of these animals are noisy and can go on for astoundingly long periods of time. Cows in particular are productive, in part because they swallow huge amounts of air. They need oxygen in their guts for the various protozoa employed there as digestive aids. Is it normal for dogs to like the smell of human farts? Yes, any odor that we find disgusting smells delicious to a dog. Dogs respond to the smell of farts, rotting fish, and carrion the same way we respond to the smell of bacon frying or cookies baking. A dog will often sniff the butt of the farter in order to inhale as much of the odor as possible. I have heard only one story about a dog being disconcerted by a fart. According to a friend, her brother once delivered a fart so evil that it made the dog sneeze, shake his head, and paw at his nose. That was either an unusual fart or an unusual dog. Do fish fart? According to our ichthyologist at the University of Guam, fish flatulence per se has not been studied, although people have investigated fish digestion. They find that although most fish have alkaline intestinal environments like our own, coral-eating fish have acidic intestinal contents. The acid serves to dissolve coral skeletal material. Coral has the same composition as Tums (calcium carbonate). One product of the reaction between acid and calcium carbonate is carbon dioxide gas. Therefore, it is logical to assume that coral-eating fish fart a lot. The other fish probably fart also, for the same reasons that we do. However, Mike Pulte, a great fish enthusiast, said that he has never seen a fish do it. I asked our ichthyologist if it were possible that fish gas would go into the swim bladder instead of out the anal opening. He said that modern fish have an air bladder that is independent of the gastrointestinal tract. The gas comes from enzymatic activity and not from the intestine. Older models of fish have their swim bladder connected to the gastrointestinal tract, but it is attached high up, closer to the mouth than to the other end, and these fish come to the surface and gulp air to fill the bladder. Therefore, we can assume that intestinal gas leaves the fish through the anal opening. We also pondered the possibility of fish making noise via flatulence, but apparently most fish noises are made through belching rather than farting. Lisa P., an aquarium enthusiast, reports that she has seen her fish fart: "I have four aquariums and many fish, and I have personally witnessed fish farting! My goldfish used to do it all the time! You'd see a little bubble come out of his anus and stay there, trapped in the mucus of a long string of poop. (Ugh!) And my opaline gourami does it too. Neither of these are coral-eating fish. I have only owned two coral-eating fish so far, but I have never seen either of them fart. It seems most likely to me that much of this gas comes from air swallowed during eating. Also, goldfish have a very simple digestive system and their food is absorbed inefficiently, so possibly the bacteria have more to feed on" Do turtles fart? Yes, turtles do fart, and their farts smell incredibly bad, as do the farts of snakes. In fact, it is my opinion, based on personal experience with reptiles and not on any formal research, that many reptiles use farts as a weapon. Reptile farts smell so bad that sometimes you can tell that one is nearby in the woods, even on a windy day, before you can see the animal. One day I was hiking through the woods in Arkansas with a friend and I told my friend, "I smell a snake fart." A second later, the snake crawled across the path. Astounding but true! In an article published in the December 2000 issue of Discover, "the world's leading expert on snake sounds," Bruce Young of LaFayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, affirmed that snakes do fart. The sonoran coral snake and the western hook-nosed snake fart with an audible popping sound when disturbed. Why do horse farts smell worse than people's farts? I'm not sure that horse farts smell worse than our farts, but they do smell different. Horses have a different diet from us and different gut microbes, so their farts have a different composition. They also fart more voluminously than humans, and the volume of the gas can be overwhelming if one is unfortunate enough to be near a farting horse indoors. What kind of animal has the highest worldwide output of flatulence? Believe it or not, the animal that wins this honor is the humble termite. Because of their diet and digestive processes (with more than the usual microbial assistance), they produce as much methane as human industry. Termite farts are believed to be a major contributor towards global warming. Is it true that cow farts contribute to global warming? Recent research has shown that most methane produced by cows and sheep emerges from the mouth rather than the anus. So one could more accurately say that cow and sheep belches are contributing to global warming. New Zealand researchers are investigating methods of breeding methane-free sheep. Is there any kind of animal that doesn't fart? If we define a fart to be an anal escape of intestinal gas, then it follows that animals that lack intestines or an anus cannot fart. Most animals possess intestines and an anus, but there are some that don't. These include: Sponges: These organisms lack true tissues and organs. They have just a few types of cells organized into a bag with holes in it. Water flows into some holes and out other holes. Sponges are so different from other animals that some biologists think we shouldn't even call them animals. Cnidaria: This phylum includes the jellyfish, corals, sea anemones and hydra. Their tissues are organized into a bag with a mouth surrounded by stinging tentacles. Food enters the mouth and is digested inside the bag, after which the leftovers are expelled via the same opening. In effect, the same hole serves as both a mouth and an anus. Any gas expelled by a cnidarian would be more appropriately termed a belch rather than a fart, since the animal lacks intestines and separate anus. Pogonophoran worms: These remarkable animals, who dwell on the sea floor near active volcanic regions associated with mid-ocean ridges, possess no mouth, no stomach, no intestines, and no anus. Apparently they retain their svelte, worm-shaped figures by giving up on eating completely! They survive by means of a mutualistic relationship with chemosynthetic bacteria that live in their flesh. Anyway, these animals cannot possibly fart. A second category of animals that probably don't fart are animals that live very deep underwater. At high pressures, gas remains in solution rather than forming bubbles. So there is a good chance that all those clams, echinoderms, fish and other animals living near the seafloor don't fart because their farts stay in solution and never emerge as bubbles, even though the animals possess perfectly good intestines and anuses. Is it possible to leave a brown spot on your pants because of a fart, and if so, what causes it? Judging from what I see when I do the laundry, I'd say that the answer to the first question is definitely yes. As for the causes, we must remember that what we call "fart" and what we call "poop" are just end-members of a continuum. That is, we can have a pure fart, or a pure poop, or anything in-between, depending upon the admixture of the two. If a sample consists mostly of poop with only a small fart component, you get such things as jet-propelled bowel movements and spongy, floating fecal masses (you know, the ones that refuse to be flushed down the toilet -- they keep popping back up). If the sample consists mostly of fart with only a small poop component, you get what is known as "skid marks" or "fart art." These can also result from inadequate wiping, but the shape of the stain is different in the two cases. Inadequate wiping leads to elongate marks parallel to one's crack, usually with well-defined edges, whereas fart art is generally more circular and has an air-brushed look. Fart art is most likely to occur if (1) a person is suffering from diarrhea, (2) the person is trying too hard to fart, and (3) the person mistakenly perceives the pressure against his sphincter to be gas pressure rather than liquid pressure. Again, that last situation is most likely to occur if the person is afflicted with diarrhea. How can we tell when it's only gas needing to come out, rather than something more serious? Our ability to distinguish between the need to fart and the need to poop is something that we learn gradually in the process of toilet training and early childhood. With the tactile nerve endings in the rectal area, we can actually feel different sensations depending upon what is waiting by the exit. Of course, sometimes we are fooled, especially if the substance at hand is extremely fluid in nature, and that is when we have the unfortunate accident of venting a squirt of diarrhea rather than an innocent fart. What is the best position for farting? That depends on what you are trying to achieve. Years and years ago, I read a novel (can't remember which) that had a character in it who was plagued with intestinal gas pain. The character would coax farts out by getting down on all fours with her butt in the air, pressing her thighs against her belly. So perhaps this is the best position for farting if you are having difficulty getting them to come out. Back when I was in geology field camp, we would sit around the campfire in the evening and ignite our flatulence. It was a ritual. When a fart was ready to emerge, the farter would announce, "I have one." And everyone else would intone, "Assume the proper position." The farter would lie back on his or her shoulders with back propped up, head between the knees, and posterior in the air. The purpose was to give the person with the match easy access to the critical vent. Expert farters of my acquaintance often shift their weight onto one leg and lift the other slightly when farting. I assume that this position is adopted less to aid in the farting process than to signal that a fart is imminent. Why do chicks always deny farting? I suppose I should start by saying that only some chicks deny farting. The rest of us acknowledge our gaseous accomplishments with pride. However, a great many sisters do deny farting. The reason is that they have been misled into thinking that farts are not ladylike. It is a great mistake to say that farting is not ladylike. The reason is that all people fart, including ladies. Anything that ladies do is by definition ladylike, and that includes the emission of anal gases. Is it possible that, by inhaling other people's farts all day long, my own farts will smell more? No, inhaled farts would go into the lungs rather than into the digestive system, and would simply be exhaled again, although it might be possible that some of the fart components might be absorbed into the blood. If you wanted to benefit from other people's farts in the way you describe, you would have to swallow them somehow. Is it possible to get stoned after inhaling two or three farts in a row? I am not aware of any intoxicating agents in flatulence. However, most farts contain very little oxygen, and you may experience dizziness if you are inhaling overly concentrated fart essence, simply from lack of oxygen. On the other hand, if you are inhaling farts in the open air and are breathing rapidly in order to inhale as much fart as possible, you may be hyperventilating, which also induces dizziness. Then there is the intrinsic hilarity factor: farts are so funny in both sound and odor that you might feel high just from the basic entertainment value of farts. Is it possible for a fart to kill you? A great many of you have asked if farts can be fatal, or if you can die from smelling a particularly bad fart. My initial response to this question was "no," but I thought I'd better ask a doctor. So now it is official, the medical opinion I received is no, a fart can't kill you. However, if you really work hard at it, you can manage to kill yourself with just about anything. I recently read of a man who hooked up his nose to his anus with a system involving a gas mask, rubber tubing and a hollow wooden post. He died of suffocation. This story comes from the Darwin Awards, and I personally cannot attest to the overall veracity of their stories. The story of the bed-bound obese man who died from inhaling his own flatulence (and whose farts almost killed the paramedics) is an urban legend that has been in circulation for some time. But according to Buzzbomb43, whom I quote: "In World War Two, the Air Force estimates that around 1000 to 2000 airmen were killed because of flatulence. The reason is B-17 bombers were not pressurized, so when bomber crews operated around 20,000 feet, the gas would expand and rupture their intestines." Now, that is a nasty way to go! There are also, of course, (in)famous stories about excessive farters that bio-hazard small toilet rooms, and when they try to light a cigarette the flame ignites the gas-rich-environment causing an explosion. My personal view about such stories is one of doubt. When you smoke and you fart does it make it smell any worse? (Brittney) Only if you swallow the cigarettes after smoking Brittney. If you settle for traditional smoking (inhaling) - the smoke will travel to your respiratory system and not to your digestive system and hence will have little-to-no effect on the odour of your farts. Of course, a minute mass of smoked Nicotine can (and does) migrate from the respiratory system into blood vessels and downstream to the digestive system (Nicotine is actually a known laxative), but the proportions are too small to contribute dearly to the odours you contribute. However, if you do swallow your cigarettes after smoking - its a different ball game. Cigarettes are produced with measures of Ammonia which certainly intensify gaseous odours. My advise for you therefore is not to swallow. I am guessing the reason why certain people think cigarettes might intensify the bad smell of a fart has to do with the fact both farts and cigarettes produce bad odours. I don't think however that this is a case of competing bad odours that in blend will create a third - even worst odour. Last, while I do not advise you to ever quit farting - I do strongly advise to quit smoking. Can excessive farting cause impotence? That depends on the tolerance level of the person with whom one is trying to be potent! Fortunately for humans, farting doesn't cause tissue damage. Other animals aren't so lucky. Soldier termites can actually turn themselves into bombs by detonating themselves via the explosive release of gas and feces, a process called "autothysis." Is it possible to inhale (suck in air) via one's anal opening? Yes, but it's a rare talent. The great early 20th Century French flatulist, Le Petomane, was able to do this, and in fact was able to suck up an entire bowlful of water (just the water, not the bowl) into his colon and expel it again with considerable force. By sucking in large quantities of air, he was able to perform lengthy shows on stage, and could imitate musical instruments, farm animals, and bird songs, whistle melodies, and play the ocarina. His productions were said to be virtually odorless, which is to be expected from air obtained directly from the outside. Here is a message I received recently (November, 1999) regarding the skill of inhaling via the anus: "i would just like you to know that i am part of a trio, who can suck in air in our anal openings. we are somewhat air-bandits. we can let the longest farts you have ever heard. our record holder, chad, stands at 24 sec. the record for most farts in a row is derek, at 492. and i, robert, have earned such nicknames as: Mad Crapper, gurglemeister, and old wetful. We have followed Le Petomane example, and have mastered the art of farting." Jason W. says, "I am a 16 year old guy that is a part of a 3-man fart on command group. We get together every Saturday night andpractice our talent to songs with a good beat. We accomplish this by getting on our hands and knees, completely relaxing, and our butt hole just opens up and air just seeps into our colons. We then get into position and let them rip. We can so far play a song called "THE EYE OF THE TIGER" (Rocky 3 theme song). We came across another group of 4 guys that can do this during the winter of 2001. We started to get together with them more frequently, and now we have a full fledged band going all on farting...We are going to try to make a CD on some songs we know, but no one wants to let us...I personally have let a fart go for about 75 seconds. On average each Saturday night we let off about 1000 farts EACH! The only problem with flatulating when we want is that now 2 of us can't help but sucking in air through our anus when we sit down." Jason has also provided the following instructions for people who would like to acquire this skill: 1) Get a pillow and a soft surface. 2) Place your ear on the pillow with your head turned sideways. 3) Put your butt up in the air, bringing your knees as close up to your head as possible. This relaxes your anal opening. 4) Once you're relaxed enough, you should feel a strange sensation...this is air traveling into your colon. 5) Through practice you will be able to do this by just sitting down. Adam reports that a student at his high school, known as "The King" could fart "God Save the Queen" by alternately inhaling and exhaling through his anus. The students refered to the inhaling process as "input." Is it possible to swallow smoke and then fart it out your anus? No, smoke consists of solid particles suspended in air. When such a mixture enters the digestive system, the solids condense on the walls and other objects in the gut, or go into suspension in liquids in the system. However, for people capable of inhaling through the anus, it is possible to smoke a cigarette with the anal opening and then blow the smoke back out. What causes the burning sensation that sometimes accompanies a fart? This is generally caused by a recent meal of hot peppers or related spices. The oils associated with these foods remain intact and active all the way through one's gastrointestinal system. If you fart in the bathtub, is the water polluted and should you refill the tub? As long as what comes out is only fart and no poop, your bath water should not be significantly polluted. Most of the gas just bubbles up and contaminates the air rather than the water. Is it true that a woman can fart out of her, shall we say, frontal opening, and if so, where does the gas come from? Yes, it is true! The gas that emerges is simply trapped air, for there is no gas production in the genitalia of a woman. The air can enter because the system is open to the outside. This highly specialized kind of fart is sometimes called a queef. This occurs especially frequently during the sex act, when air in the genitalia gets compressed and is forced out at high pressure. Can a man fart out of his genital opening? I have asked various men this question and they all deny it emphatically. However, elrondh contributed the information that under certain rare and artificially-induced circumstances, a man might pass gas through his penis. In this case, the man's bladder had been inflated for a medical procedure, the air introduced via catheter inserted through the urethra. This gas escaped during later attempts to urinate, "accompanied by a brief but sharp burning sensation." Is it possible to capture a fart in a jar and save it for later use? It should be theoretically possible to do this, but there would be lots of logistical problems. I would suggest using a plastic bag instead of a jar. You might try the following as a science fair experiment: Fart into several plastic bags and seal them carefully. Then fill several other plastic bags with ordinary air. Wait 24 hours. Then get volunteers to smell the contents of the bags to see if they can correctly identify which ones contain the farts. This should tell you if it is possible to store a fart in any useful way. Malachi and Megaera have come up with a way to capture a fart in a jar. They say to do it in the bathtub while bathing. Fill the jar with bath water and then hold it with the open end downward. Lean back in the bathtub so that your fart bubbles will emerge in front of you rather than behind you where you can't see them. Catch the bubbles in the jar, and put the lid on the jar while it's still underwater. This way, you capture a fairly pure fart uncontaminated by atmospheric air. To enjoy your captured fart to the fullest extent, make sure that your jar does not already smell like whatever was it it before, like pickles or peanut butter. Meep wrote to say that her fiancé was an expert fart collector at the age of ten. He used Kodak film canisters, and kept them on a shelf in his room. Experiments on his mother proved the efficacy of his method. Is it weird to enjoy farting? It is not unusual to enjoy farting. I believe that enjoyment of farting is a healthy attitude, since everyone has to fart. If a person is farting to the extent that it creates problems and unhappiness, then a visit to a doctor is in order. Is it common for people to enjoy smelling their own farts? I believe that it is not only common, it is universal. A person farts and then thinks, at least subconsciously, "Wow, I made that!" Can farting be considered sexy? Everything imaginable, and many things not imaginable, can be considered sexy by humans. However, the female southern pine beetle exudes a pheromone called frontalin in her flatulence that not only serves to attract males but acts as a general gathering call to both males and females of her species. Her farts are an invitation to an orgy. Unfortunately for her, her frontalin-laden farts also attract predators. What color is a fart? Farts are, alas, colorless. All of the gases that make up farts have no inherent color. But just think of how interesting it would be if farts were bright orange like nitrogen dioxide gas! It would certainly take the mystery out of who farted. Never-the-less, a high-personality gas like fart gas suggests color to people. Some people envision farts as brown, others as green or yellow. I have always thought of farts as brown, presumably because poop is brown. When someone farts in our car, that person might say, "You better not breathe through your mouth for awhile, or your teeth will turn brown." I knew a toddler who used to draw pictures of farts as yellow rectangles full of holes, like a slice of Swiss cheese. She thought of farts as yellow, and said that she knew they were rectangular because she could feel the sharp corners scraping against her on the way out! Ernie C. suggests that if farts were visible, they would look like pork rinds. Helen says, "It always seemed to me like farts were lumps of coal, black in color and irregularly spherical in shape." Do other people smell a fart better than the farter? The fart should smell just as much for the person who created it as it does for other people. However, the farter is somewhat protected by having the fart propelled away from his body in a direction opposite to his nose. Farting upwind nullifies this advantage. Why is it that when you scratch your *** through two layers of clothing (your underwear and your jeans) your fingers still stink? As pointed out by Barb F., who contributed the term to the fart thesaurus, a fart can be regarded as "aerosolized poop," which means that microscopic fragments and droplets of poop are actually distributed throughout the gaseous matrix of the fart. When delivered from the anus with some force, the components of the fart can penetrate one's clothing and these tiny particles can be trapped in the fibers of the cloth. The particles are transferred to your fingers and then your nose when you scratch and sniff. Why is it sometimes possible to taste farts? The sense of taste detects substances that are either liquid or dissolved in liquid. You can taste a fart when the fart's constituent molecules go into solution in your saliva. Do fart particles disperse in the air and float around until they hit something and then stick to it? The ultimate fate of fart particles depends on the nature of the particles. Gas molecules mostly mix into the atmosphere, although some may react chemically to form new substances. Aerosolized particles of liquid and solid poop probably do condense on surfaces. Most of these particles are polar (with a positively charged end and a negatively charged end) and are attracted to other polar substances or charged surfaces like a monitor screen. Other fart particles condense on microscopic water droplets in the air if the humidity is very high (as in a bathroom), and some particles go into solution in water. Is it possible to have bloody farts? Yes, this can happen if you are suffering from an anal fissure, a split in the wall of the colon. It can also happen to a woman who experiences a queef during her period. Why do farts seem to follow the farter? I'm sure that everyone has experienced this phenomenon, in which one delivers oneself forth of a silent but potent gaseous emission and then steps rapidly away, only to have the fart cling to one's person. Part of the reason for this annoying characteristic of farts is the turbulence that follows in the wake of a moving person. The fart "slip streams" or is actually pulled along in the farter's direction by the air currents behind the person. Another factor is that part of the fart is caught in the farter's clothing, and diffuses out slowly after the main part of the emission has dispersed. Why do farts smell so much worse in a shower than anywhere else? There are several factors. First of all, a shower is a small, enclosed space, so the fart gas is more concentrated, and the high turbidity of the air in the shower circulates the gas through the space effectively. Secondly, the high humidity and high temperature conditions in the shower enhance a person's sense of smell and taste. The farts don't actually smell worse, it's just that we can smell them better than usual. Similar conditions prevail in the bathtub. What would happen if someone farted on Venus? If Venus's surface temperature were a mere 200 to 300 degrees Fahrenheit, liquid water could exist there because of Venus's extremely high atmospheric pressure. But the temperature on Venus is almost 900 degrees Fahrenheit. Because humans are mostly water, a person would not simply emit gas on Venus, but would become gas, a whole-body fart. Venus already has a lot of sulfur compounds in its atmosphere, so a fart on Venus probably wouldn't even produce much of a smell. If you were in space without a suit, would a fart have the energy to propel you forward? Yes, a fart should propel you forward, since there is virtually no opposing force in the form of friction or gravity to counteract the force of the fart. Is it possible to freeze farts, and would they still be smelly after they are defrosted? The water vapor component of farts would freeze quite readily, but to freeze the entire fart would require high pressure and low temperature conditions such as that used to produce dry ice. The fart's composition would be unchanged by the process, and hence would still be smelly upon reversion to the gaseous state. Is it possible for a fart to rip your underwear? This is unlikely, because most underwear is made of material with a fairly high tensile strength, meaning that it can endure a certain level of extensional stress without brittle failure. Furthermore, the porous nature of underwear fabrics allows much of the fart's force to pass through the spaces rather than to stress the fabric. Where does the word "fart" come from? According to Eric Partridge in his excellent book of word origins (Origins: A Short Etymological Dictionary of Modern English), our word fart comes from the Old English word feortan, presumably of echoic origin, meaning that the word was chosen to sound like the object named. When it is cold outside and you fart, can you see it like you can see your breath? Now, that's an interesting idea! My guess would be yes, since farts are nice and moist like our breath, but this is one question that I'm not in a position to answer. I live in the tropics, and it never gets cold here. Several people have tried the experiment and have written to tell me the results. Most people said that they could indeed see their farts, but one person said that he couldn't see it even with his pants off. Here is what anywhere32 reported: "In the boys' locker room after morning water polo practice it was cold out and one of the players only had on his speedo and let out a fart. About four of us saw it and couldn't contain our laughter for the rest of the day." John of the UK said, "Farts expelled in cold air leave what can only be described as a long bushy tail. This is quite funny waiting on a train station platform on a cold dark frosty morning. A person will move away from everyone to a safe distance, and then release a long quiet fart, only to have a sudden and dramatic long bushy white tail coming from their anus; it goes down a little way and slowly curves up ending in a point, just like a dogs tail!" What are some other words for fart? The word "fart" is both a noun (referring to the substance and the sound), and a verb (referring to the act of farting). i seriously have no idea how this was posted as r & s!!!! but i hope u enjoy it as wierd as it is! i just copied and pasted it!! i thought it was funny
Obesity Causes? Social Stigma? Obesity: Social Prejudices and the Medical Community’s Disregard It’s a meaner world out there folks. Everywhere you turn there are people who choose to be hateful in deed and word for just about any reason you can think of. There is the obvious and not so subtle racism, class prejudice, ageism, and political polarization, just to name a few. That’s not to say that there are not exceptions to every rule but so many people have adopted political correctness to such a degree that humans have found much more subtle ways of showing their hatreds. Some of these behaviors have gone underground only to emerge in our institutions, businesses and social strata. Sure it’s always been there but now it appears that its effects are more noticeable and very, effectively dehumanizing to those on the receiving end of the many prejudices and bigotry being voiced concerning those of us who are not a size 5. Obese, heavy, overweight people are REALLY catching hell. People assume that when they see an overweight or obese person that they must be lazy, unproductive; lacking the will to take better care of them selves. I am sure that a small percentage of people in the USA fit that bill, however, you may be surprised that most of them do not. There are many reasons for obesity. The bottom line though is that people who are obese or become obese have bodies that literally no longer work the way they are supposed to. Here are a few medical and non-medical reasons people become obese: Processed Foods: White-flour-based anything, sugar, coffee, booze and high sodium content (all of which usually make up processed food) is the enemy of the human body. It doesn’t know what to do with it but glean what little nutrients it can, store the majority and dump the rest. Hypothyroidism: Since the thyroid controls the basic workings of the human metabolism, if it is too low, then it cannot convert many food calories into a usable source and that inability will cause weight gain despite healthy eating practices. When the thyroid goes wacko on the low end you WILL get fat. If it goes wacko on the high end, you can lose weight exponentially and have as many medical problems as an obese person. Cushing’s Disease/Syndrome (Cushing’s disease has always been considered a dog or horse problem, hmmm go figure): This disease is “reportedly” prevalent in only 10% of each million people if you want to believe what the CDC, FDA and AMA bother to report. Cushing’s occurs because the body producing too much Cortisol. Cortisol controls regulation of blood pressure and the immune system, and keeps insulin levels in the body stable. In Cushing’s Disease, it is assumed that only a tumor on the pituitary gland is responsible for the production of excess Cortisol. However, a few other doctors disagree and have found that Cushing’s Syndrome can also be caused by food dependency and steroid- based products such as Prednisone; especially if they have been taken for long periods of time. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome: is a hormonal disorder in women. Most women would not know to ask their doctors to have them tested for this disease because the medical community considers it rare. I dare say it may be the norm today with the amount of hormones coming through our food products for many years. Oral Contraceptives: Progestins and other steroid based drugs for cancer often throw the thyroid out of balance and injure the Hypothalamus, which usually results in weight gain. Anti-Psychotic and Anti-Depressants: Taken even a short time, depending on the health of the thyroid or hypothalamus, will cause either weight gain or weight loss. The majority is weight gain especially in those taking these drugs for many years. I am doing research now as to how many people taking these drugs have had their thyroid effected, treated ,or removed. Insulin and Insulin-Stimulating Drugs: These drugs are used to treat diabetes almost always leads to weight gain. Talking about a conflict of interest when it comes to a person already overweight from diabetes and deeply disturbing for those with type 2 diabetes [ Reviewed By: Harvey Simon, MD, Editor-in-Chief, Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School; ] Doctors, pharmaceutical companies, the diet industry, and exercise businesses have a vested interest in keeping as many people obese as possible. Money. I mean do you know how much a lap-band and stomach stapling costs? In some instances Medicare will pay for these surgeries before they pay for the many tests available to diagnose any one of the above stated problems. Instead, millions are spent on denigrating people who find themselves obese and have no clue why. Billions are spent on gyms, get-thin drugs, exercise tapes and books, special foods, diet clubs, plastic surgeons and equipment, by people desperate to reclaim active, healthier lives and avoid the worse part…social stigma. People are openly mea
