Does anyone think that plastic surgery can cause low self-esteem?
Apart from the obvious example of cosmetic surgery going wrong, do you think cosmetic surgery can cause low self-esteem in people who have it? Do you think the fact people can have cosmetic surgery can cause low self-esteem in those who don't even undergo it? Any other reasons you do or don't think it does? But, Pro-Vampire, is plastic surgery the cause of that? Or is feeling like you need it just an indicator of low self-esteem?

- aside from it going wrong, i think it can. if you think that you need surgery to make yourself look good, you have very low self-esteem
- I think it can cause low self-esteem in some cases. Someone with plastic surgery could end up liking their results, thinking that it makes them more confident in themselves. But then they go crazy with it sometimes, doing many surgeries to fix things that really don't need to be fixed. Michael Jackson and several other stars, especially women, who have been under the knife many times over and still aren't satisfied with the way they look. Then they become disfigured from trying to change their looks so many times, and they're haunted for the rest of their lives for doing that to themselves. Surgery helps sometimes. Too much surgery is not a good thing.
- i think that plastic surgery is not the cause necessarily for self esteem issues. any one looking into plastic surgery usually already has self esteem issues to begin with. getting plastic surgery can help some ones self esteem issues in the way of that it may get rid of the thing that is making them so insecure. for example perhaps some one has a huge nose and they are so worried that all people see is their nose that they get it fixed and feel much better after seeing the results. this person probably is confident now that they don't feel like everyone is staring. however, i think that it CAN cause issues because of the same reason. some one who feels their last resort to be happy is plastic surgery might have more issues then just the way they look. plastic surgery might make them feel worse about themselves because they will feel like they are so horrible that it would only take a doctor and some fake pieces to make them worth looking at. this can be a hard feeling to have. i feel like i rattled on...sorry but i hope i got my point across. i don't know why you asked the question but i hope my answer has helped!
- That would depend on the person - some people gain great self esteem from looking how they want to look - filling an aesthetic desire (even the extreme cases, like the man who got horns and a split tongue and scale tattoos to look like a lizard, perfectly happy with it). Some people react very badly too it. A recent concern (in admittedly limited circles) is dental surgery on the jawline to reduce problems makes people with these problems. They change from being very odd looking and unattractive to attractive. And then there were a few suicides from people who had undergone this because they couldn't cope with the change in attention (this turned out not to be a general trend, but is an example of the opposite reaction). So, basically, for the people undergoing surgery, there should be tests developed that will give us some... but not totally accurate... idea of their reaction, or maybe meeting a therapist (some places do this already) As for the people not undergoing surgery: some feel worse, some feel superior (all the magazines pointing out which celebrities have had "work"... they're not admiring...)
- No, I think just the opposite. For example, if you have an ugly nose and that keeps you from being pretty, having it fixed can make you feel like a whole new person for the rest of your life. Most people don't even notice someone has had something done, they just think they look 'better'. If you don't like something, change it!
- It is a sin against Jesus: God, ask Him into your heart, and He will help you to love yourself.
