Plastic surgery...a moral issue?

I lament over my profile every time I see photo of it. I have what someone might call a weak chin...it's small. I also have a high forehead. It might not be very noticeable to others, but I keep dissecting my looks and considering plastic surgery to ''fix'' my face by getting a small chin implant. I have seen 3 plastic surgeons in consultation over the last 3 years. All agreed, of course, that a chin implant would help me look more proportional. The procedure would cost about $3,000. A deeper part of me continues to ask myself why I would pay so much money to have someone cut me open and place a foreign object in my face. When I mention the issue to my boyfriend and family members I get the same response, "Your face is fine! You're pretty the way you are!" Inside I think "I want a stronger chin! I want to feel pretty!" But would I truly feel better after having the implant? Or just another superficial person. Shouldnt I be more worried about the genocide in Darfur?

  1. Not everyone has to be a monk in a monastery. If you really want this then you should go for it. Just don't go overboard. Once people have enough fakeness planted into them they are disgusting. Especially unnecessary breast implants. (Implants when the girl basically has no breasts is fine, but if they are already a handful then it's rediculous)
  2. I think you have to decide what is best for you - not what your family or boyfriend think. You can worry about the problems of the world whether you have the surgery or not. You could certainly get some counselling around this - someone who has no investment in this and could help you decide if this is what you want for yourself. It would probably be a good investment. I did a little bit of investigation and found that there is apparently a high degree of satisfaction with chin implants. At least according to one research study conducted in 2003. Here's a link to that article, for what it's worth: http://archfaci.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/5/3/224 All the best to you.
