Isn't it illegal to advertise cosmetic surgery on TV?

Or at the very least unethical? Because when my grandma got one eye fixed with laser surgery her doctor said he couldn't advise her to have more work done of them because it was unethical. And now I seem to see adverts for cosmetic surgery all over TV. What's the deal? TW x

1. Her doctor is just a really good doctor. There are no specific ethical restrictions about advertising or recommending surgery. Anybody can advertise, because you would still need to talk to a doctor about the surgery. A doctor can recommend anything he thinks will help the person, whether it's physical or mental. Some doctors have better personal ethics and will draw the line, but there will always be another doctor willing to perform the surgery.
2. I'm fairly certain that physicians can advertise themselves and their services, but they can't promise a procedure or a medication without an objective examination. For example, a doctor can say that she does rhinoplasty, but she can't say you get a rhinoplasty if you come in for a consultation. That being said, if you're sitting in with a physician, they can recommend anything that they see appropriate. While I don't know anything about your grandma's case, a physician would probably consider it unethical to recommend treatment your grandmother doesn't need or wouldn't benefit from. Hopefully that helps.
