I'm getting gum shaping surgery soon, what should I expect?

My orthodontist told me that I can get a cosmetic laser surgery after my braces to take off a bit of my gums (I have a "gummy smile"). I can't find much information about it, so what can I expect? I'm kind of nervous. Thanks!

  1. this is pretty high tech stuff, and since i'm relatively new at dentistry and can't afford a $60,000 laser.... and i'm not a periodontist. What you can expect is for your orthodontist (or your general dentist) to REFER you to a periodontist who deals w/ gums and may have that laser. THAT person, in exchange for your fee, shoudl not only do that service, but should EXPLAIN everything to you to your satisfaction. Sorry to be kind of a dork about it, but my BIGGEST pet peeve on Yahoo Answers is people who have like a wisdom tooth extraction for tomorrow morning and ask "what's going to happen?" The doctors who do the procedure are obliged to explain everything! What I CAN tell you, is that the laser makes to vibration and usually you don't even need anesthetic, so it won't hurt; maybe a little soreness, but it'll be an easy procedure! good luck!!
