Is it normal for your face to be numb after surgery for eye and nose?
I just had surgery yesterday. I was jumped two weeks ago and my nose and orbital floor were broken. Yesterday I had surgery to repair that, and my face is numb on the right side of my lips, nose, and cheek. I didn't get a chance to talk to my doctor about this yet. Is this normal after this type of surgery?

- This is completely normal. When surgery involves the facial structures, sometimes, because of swelling and bruising, it puts pressure on your facial nerves. Plus, in addition, to being " knocked out ", generally a local anesthetic is used as well. A local numbs the area. It may have not completely worn off yet. If you are experiencing swelling, apply ice for about 15 minutes 3-4 times a day. Place the ice on top of a small towel or pillowcase, NOT directly on the skin. This will help with any swelling and reduce your discomfort. Be sure to take any pain medication before your discomfort becomes " unbearable". Pain medications take about 30-45 minutes to kick in. If you wait until your pain is so bad and then you take the medication, you will have to wait for it to kick in, in the meantime, your pain level increases. It may also be wise to take Ibuprofen( Motrin/Advil) because this will help with the discomfort and will reduce swelling. Be sure to take it with food or milk because it can cause an upset stomach.Tylenol does NOT have an ingredient to help with swelling. If your symptoms persist or worsen, call the Doc ASAP. However, if you are worried or concerned, just call the Doc's office and, he/she can give you reassurance. I hope that this is useful and that you feel better soon.
