When it comes to cosmetic surgery, why are African Americans frowned upon?
I have Asian friends who have had eyelid surgery, yet I see no one bother them or claim that they "want to be white." Conversely, if one of my African American friends even alludes to the desire to have plastic surgery on their noses, people get angry and claim that they "want to be white" and are "obliterating an ethnic feature." Can anyone help me understand the hypocrisy? @Straight-I'm half African American and half American Indian. @Scholar-It's because they think their noses look as if they've been smashed (ya know, because of the wideness).

- i would just ignore it and i think just because of michael jackson (R.I.P.) that people are so against it
- Honestly, I think it's just your friends. They don't sound very...friendly.
- Because White people oppressed your race. No Maori would look at another Maori getting plastic surgery to make him look whiter kindly. None of us would show him/her that much respect. White people took our land, and now a Maori wants to look like them. It's like your not proud of race kind of thing. Changing your features to look like another race, or more attractive to another race is like saying 'My race is ugly, I want to look like this one'. Y'know?
- Because of the stigma that "wide nostrils" and "big lips" and "nappy" hair use to be frowned upon as ugly and disgusting in the white community and some black people truly believed that and some didn't. Instead of it just being a White persons personal opinion it was and still to this day pushed in the media that having European structured face is more beautiful than an African face. Also the fact that Black folks have this stupid obsession with skin color among BLACK folks don't help the issue either.
- Wow, I've never heard someone say that before. That's extremely hypocritical, what with many white people getting lip and butt implants. Does anyone ever accuse them of trying to be black? I don't think so. Well, anybody accusing a proud African-American of "trying to be white" should grow up and get a grip. I, personally, can't think of any reason I'd want to be white. People who say so just think they're all that and a bag of chips when really, THEY'RE the ones with the insecurities. There has been a long history of prejudice directed at the African-American community in America, so I don't really find harsh remarks directed toward our community surprising. I just roll my eyes and ignore it.
- That's garbage. Everyone talks about Asians wanting to be white all the time with eyelid surgery the fear of tanning, the nose bridge surgery. No one says blacks getting plastic surgery is because they want to be white. I think it's clear the black Americans have no love for whites.
- well what's the reason your friends want to have plastic surgery on their noses?
