Are people who get plastic surgery (for cosmetic reasons and not reconstruction) a little 'unwell' in the head?

I remember the pain/recovery of surgery (not to mention the risk) and I wonder why someome would choose that for themselves if it wasn't medically necessary. My abdominal surgery scar is still kinda uncomfortable, five years later. And when we're talking about the face, it just seems so counter-intuitive to let someone cut /into/ it by choice. Maybe you have to be a little bit obsessed or nuts to actually do it?

  1. Sometimes yes and sometimes no. A lot of people who suffer from accidents or burns, may want to look more normal. However, a lot of plastic surgeons do not adequately screen patients for mental health conditions such as OCD and Body Dysmorphia Disorder. It is pretty much a double edged sword. Some people who need it the most, like survivors of cancer (including breast) can afford it, while those who do get it, get too much.
