Why do people have plastic surgery?

Recently I been looking into this subject and can't really get my head around why people have it done. Take Michael Jackson for example, he was perfect before and then by the end looked like a skeleton gone wrong. How much money did he waste on plastic surgery? Also some of these celebrities who have had nose jobs, there was nothing wrong with their noses in the first place and to be honest after they had had the surgery it looked worse than before. Oh and breast implants, who in their right mind wants to walk around with massive silicone balls that look about as fake as an artifical christmas tree? Look at Jordon and Dolly Parton? What man would find them attractive with breasts like that? Please can someone answer why people (especially celebrities) waste their money going ahead with plastic surgery?

  1. They think it makes them make them more attractive to others.
  2. Theres no such thing as perfection, only what makes you feel good about yourself. While you say oversize breasts like Jordans are wrong, a lot of guys disagree and find that attractive. She likes her image that way, so the money shes paid has made her happy (and famous). There are 3 levels of plastic surgery. Those that need it (reconstruction from accidents, replacing lost features from cancer, repairing burns etc), those that have a defect (people considered ugly, people who have no self esteem because of it, people with an abnormality that is hindering their quality of life) and those who simply do it out of vainity (most of hollywood). Very few people mind groups 1 and 2 but plastic surgery on a already good looking person to try to reach the impossible perfection is crazy.
  3. I'll make it short and sweet: they're not satsified by with the way they already look so they try to improve their looks with plastic surgery. Sometimes surgery works but sometimes it doesn't.
  4. Other people don't necessarily have to think it's beautiful, but if they do, it's all that matters. You see, we as humans judge ourselves so harshly. More harsh than any other person. Whenever we see something we don't like, especially when we compare ourselves to others, (i.e. Oh, [INSERT FAMOUS PERSON HERE]'s nose is so perfect! My nose is so big and long, damn it I need to fix it!) we must fix it somehow. The more we see ourselves, the more we are disappointed. We have to fix it somehow, and what do we turn to? Plastic surgery, of course. In the end, it's all about our self-esteem. Not about how we really look and how other's judge us, it's about how we feel about ourselves. After we get plastic surgery, we look in the mirror, and even if what we see isn't any better, we think, "Well, at least that ugly nose is gone." And you see, there's this thing called dissonance. It's when you do something, you try to convince yourself you were right about it so you don't feel bad about yourself. If the after picture is worse, dissonance comes in. (i.e. Other people might be thinking you look hideous now but you think to yourself, "Well I spent all that money and time and I volunteered to do it, so they're just crazy. I look amazing!") You see what I'm trying to say? Sorry if that's just a big blab of nothingness, lol, I'm just putting in a few points here and there. ;]
