Are multiple cosmetic surgeries merely for the sake of vanity a bad thing? Is the desire....?
Is the desire to have multiple cosmetic surgeries caused by psychological problems? If so, what would those problems be? I've read several articles and they all say something different.

- There are some unhealthy obsessions stemming from vanity - people who suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Perfectionism, Egoism, or Narcissism tend to be prone to them. Many (actually most) good cosmetic surgeons do have a psychologist on staff to counsel patients before surgery for this reason - the desire for cosmetic surgery can come from a psychological disorder causing obsession with vanity OR distorted self-image (such as depression or delusional disorder), and very good surgeons will make sure the desire for surgery is healthy before proceeding. That said, I'd definitely get a consult with a therapist before proceeding with surgery.. The desire for surgery can be healthy if it comes from a practical standpoint (deviated septum, etc.) or from a career perspective (actresses are often pushed to look "perfect" and some (not all, but some) even have no choice if they want to continue to have successful careers - sad, but true). Or if there's an extreme issue such as very large and protruding nose, nonexistent breasts (AA or smaller), excessive cellulite caused by uncontrollable circumstances, such as medical issues or childbirth - many experts feel there is nothing wrong with wanting to correct it. Almost ALL psychological disorders (depression, bi-polar, egoism, perfectionism, narcissistic, borderline, delusional, etc. etc.) can cause problems leading to the desire for surgery. However, the most common reason for wanting multiple surgeries is mild depression and low self esteem, causing poor perception of body image. You may not even know you're suffering from it... a psychologist will ask you the reason for wanting the surgery - they'll ask if you feel you're unloved, or ignored; if you avoid mirrors or photos obsessively; if you hate yourself or are unhappy much of the time; if you want more attention from people; and so on. None of these are healthy reasons for cosmetic surgery! Again, I definitely suggest a psych consult prior to surgery.
