Why do most people go much more for looks than the substance of a person?

Looks are always temporary and eventually fade away later in life unless we die young or have plastic surgery whereas the substance or inside of a person such as the personality mostly can last a life time. Besides looks can be really deceiving sometimes and a person with good looks might an awful person or someone with average looks might have a really good personality. I know there must be at least a small amount of physical attraction mutually in relationships but why are looks empathized as really important?

  1. Who says? Only superficial individuals are concerned with solely looks. Those who are interested in something deeper will always look at what can't be physically seen
  2. It's all in our biology. We subconsciously are attracted to those who are good looking so that we will produce attractive offspring. Men are attracted to big breasts, hips and eyes. This is because all three of those things indicate high oestrogen levels, usually meaning that they are more fertile. Women are naturally attracted to 'manly' men. This is for her own protection; they look for someone tall and well built who will look after her and make strong, healthy babies. Obviously our conscience can make us think twice about our instincts but it's all in our genetics to be devilishly shallow. We're nothing more than animals showing off our bright feathers for the ladies.
