Is being unhappy with plastic surgery results and believing you recieved a botched job the same thing?
I went to a plastic surgeon today for a consultation because I have incredibly asymmetrical breasts by about 2 whole cup sizes. I found him to be very arrogant and felt that he spoke down to me a significant amount, especially when I had questions. He then proceeded to compare my breasts to a car, saying that if I was unhappy with my breasts after the surgery it was quote, "my problem" - he went on to explain how if you ended up not liking the car you bought, you were out of luck - and that I could either do nothing, or pay him an additional $7,000 to fix what went wrong regardless of the problem. He even explained to me that the particular implant suited for me was a tear drop shaped one which, in some instances, could flip and cause the heaviest part to sit on top rather than on the bottom. I asked what could be done if that were to happen. My options were do nothing, or see him again to do the surgery over. I'm trying to figure out whether being disattisfied and recieving a botched job is the same thing because I am trying to sort out how much of a jerk he really was. If someone comes into your home to put down flooring and does an incredibly poor job, you can take them to court - if they don't refund you or fix what was wrong - for your money back. Can the same thing not be done in cases of plastic surgery which, in my opinion, is much more important than flooring? Needless to say, I won't be returning to him even though the $200 consultation fee, which would have been deducted from my surgery, has now gone to waste. I just want to know if all plastic surgeons are this way and I am being unreasonable or if he really was an awful man.

- No, not all plastic surgeons are like that. As with any industry, cosmetic surgery has its assholes. Now I'm not saying that any surgeon will offer you a free redo if you aren't happy with the results (unless of course you win a settlement), but not all of them will talk to you like that. That guy is a straight up douche, find a better doctor man.
- OMG this guy was a total dirtbag. For future reference, the $200 consultation fee was a clue. Good surgeons have confidence in their abilities to impress you, and they have a high percentage of patients who choose them for surgery after the initial consultation. Since they don't have to make up for a lack of surgeries, they don't have to charge high consultation fees. Good surgeons also have another thing in common: your happiness is very important. A good surgeon will give you a realistic prediction of your end result, and s/he should tell you what aspects about your own personal health and anatomy could hinder a desirable result. For example, my surgeon stressed that I had asymmetrical breasts, and I would still have some asymmetry after the procedure. The difference is not obvious by any means, but it was good that he made sure I understood that I wouldn't look perfect. Although a surgeon should take the initiative to volunteer the things that could hinder your results, it is ultimately your responsibility to ask. It would be impossible for a surgeon to "fix" something that cannot be made right due to your personal anatomy. You should have a clear understanding of what to expect before you schedule your surgery. If you are unhappy with your results, a good surgeon will likely do everything s/he can to make you happy, even if it means doing your surgery over for free (although you will likely have to pay the surgical center fees again). If you truly do end up with a botched job, it's not likely that your surgeon will try to make it right. If a surgeon lets you walk away looking awful, s/he is not a good surgeon, and probably doesn't care enough to make it right, or it wouldn't have been that bad to begin with. If you happen to run into complications during or after healing, be prepared to pay the full surgical fee all over. Unless the complication is a direct result of an error on the surgeon's end, it's nothing that can be predicted, and often not much can be done to prevent it. This is not a risk-free operation, and you must be willing to accept the risk that sometimes things do go wrong, even with an excellent surgeon. If it's not the surgeon's fault, s/he deserves to be paid to help you. This surgeon was a pompous bastard. If I were you, I would tell everyone you can about your experience, including yahoo, google, and any other sites that allow you to post reviews. Jerks like this don't deserve patients. Keep looking, there are a lot of good surgeons out there. Don't forget to look at pictures, as that is about the only way you can tell if your surgeon can achieve aesthetically pleasing results.
