Is having wisdom teeth removed considered to be a cosmetic surgery to insurance companies?

I need dental insurance and it says that it doesn't cover cosmetic surgery unless there has been an injury. My wisdom teeth are causing lots of swelling and pain and I was wondering if having them removed could be covered under an insurance policy

  1. i don't think wisdom teeth counts as cosmetic. and normally wisdom teeth should be covered under insurance, to some extent at least. (i had to pay a co-pay and that's it i think). call the insurance company first to be sure or check their website.
  2. Wisdom teeth removal is usually covered under medical insurance if they are impacted and need to be removed by an oral surgeon. If they can be removed in the dental office, they would be covered under your dental insurance. This is NOT considered a cosmetic procedure. Hope this helps.
  3. In some cases, yes, wisdom teeth extraction(s) are considered cosmetic surgery -however- Someone I know had an impacted & infected wisdom tooth that was extracted by an oral surgeon in the hospital and that was covered by insurance. Also, myself, I had them also done through an oral surgeon (mine weren't impacted but I had 2 supernumerary teeth in my palate I got extracted as well) in the hospital and that was covered. One surgeon wanted me in the private office 350$ a tooth + sedation 600$ + medications 200$ (rip off city) and another just got it all mcovered through insurance. So for me, it just depended on what office I went to. For you, if your wisdom teeth are in rough enough shape needing the hospital, then you have a better chance of getting them covered.
