Why is the public so opposed to cosmetic or plastic surgery?

Everyone I have ever spoken to as well as public reaction to surgeries has been negative. Why is the public so negative about plastic, cosmetic surgery?

Public Comments

  1. Probably because of all the risks involved, even though the results could be amazing, you're risking looking worse than you did before the surgery, sometimes even death :O
  2. 1. Because the majority of plastic and cosmetic surgeons don't know enough, have enough skills or artistic ability to achieve what the public wants. 2. The legitimate boards allow too many under qualified (i.e., practitioners who lack the knowledge, skills or artistic ability to achieve the client's desired outcome) practitioners to use their board certification. 3. Hence, board certification doesn't translate into the client's desired results. 4. Those drs are more interested in money than mastering the skills to achieve the client's desired outcome. 5. The industry blames the client for bad results rather than protecting the public from bad practitioners. They put the onus on the client for reporting and proving the dr should not be practicing instead of cleaning up their profession. You will hear such stupid rationale from drs and the plastic/cosmetic surgery industry such as "The patient had UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS." No, as in my case, I wanted an improvement, NOT a nose that has poor circulation after only ONE rhinoplasty. This was a board certified and had over 15 years of experience. Yes, my realistic expectation was to improve upon what I have, not worsen what I have . See list of realistic expectations below. 6. The boards themselves make you jump through hoops to find out their certification. All I want is to see if my dr is certified NOT to share MY information so you can try to sell me products and services. 7. They use excuses that one gets what they pay for. Not true. Celebrities with a significant resources have had poor outcomes. Look at Meg Ryan. With all her money, her dr should have known better than to have so poorly treated her lips. Realistic expectations about plastic or cosmetic surgery: 1. You will lose or damage the function of the part being operated upon. 2. There is a strong chance that you will trade one aesthetic problem with another one. 3. There is a strong chance your surgeon does not know how to achieve what you desire and will not tell you he will not operate on you. 4. You will look worse. 5. You will have a hard time suing in court. 6. You will have wasted your money. 7. The boards, who pretend to be protecting you, will not help you AND will allow a dr who shouldn't be practicing to continue despite repeated poor aesthetic results. If you want to cover yourself, rather than signing permission to operate line, write on there to "please see client statement outlining what Dr._____and I agreed to on ____ # of pages. My signature will appear at end of my surgeon and client agreement" In those pages include photos of yourself, what your surgeon told YOU they can and cannot do, what you want and DRAW IT ONTO the photo of yourself, have the surgeon sign each page of the addendum and have copies made BEFORE you enter the surgery. Include that your prepayment will be given back if the surgeon cannot agree with the addendum. That addendum is perfectly reasonable if the dr has not lied to you and is willing to back his/her self up in writing. Otherwise, walk away from the agreement to get surgery. Protect yourself!!!
  3. Because most plastic or cosmetic surgeons don't know how to make people look good. It doesn't only require smarts, education and skills but artistry. In the typical population only 10% are good artists. Sooo, what are the chances that someone has the combined smarts, education, skills and artistic talent found in only 10% of the population? Very small chances that your cosmetic surgery is going to come out good. Most of the people getting things done look worse. You can't tell me that lumpy lipo looks better than fat, or duck lips look better than skinny lips, or an upturned nose with a lot of nostril show looks better than a natural nose. Or boobs that look like oranges are an improvement over a flat chest.
  4. It can be considered a form of body-mutilation,similar to cutting oneself.
