Why are people so against plastic surgery?

I had plastic surgery in my life, and I'm somewhat happy about it, yet everywhere I go, my family, friends, etc, the large opinion is, ewwwww, you had work done? eww, what's next. Do you want to look like Cher or Michael Jackson? When I show them pictures it's always an ewww or OMG no way, or they find ways to make fun of me. Even though I personally think I look better, and I get random strangers who don't know a thing about me who say that I look absolutely fine and dandy. I don't understand why everyone is so against it. It makes you look better! Or can at least. If it makes you look worse, then whatever you had done, take it out. If it's an implant, take it out. If it's a bad nosejob, well attempt fixing it. Nothing's ever really 100% permanent, even bad plastic surgery. So then , why does our society have such a negative view on it? I mean virtually everyone in Hollywood has it done, and they look fabulous. God forbid average joe gets it. WTF? So it's okay for rich people to get it done, but it's taboo and wrong for the average joe? Also, why is it okay for people to go to the MAC counter, dye their hair, and do all sorts of things, diet/etc, that change their image much more drastically than anything else, yet if they want subtle changes through surgery it's a no no, and what not. I can't tell you the amount of disapproval that I"ve had ever since I decided to go under the knife. "oh it made you look older, oh you look like cher, oh you look more "fake"." It's honestly like what the hell? Do these people even know what they're talking about, or is it only personal biases that are getting thrown out? Jealousy? I don't get it.

Public Comments

  1. they' react like that because they're jealous! trust me! plastic surgery makes you look gorgeous! i'm 100% for it
  2. Unless it's an emergency or life-threatening, I don't support plastic surgery. It's the most untrue thing you could ever do to yourself. When you get plastic surgery, you're making yourself a fake. Don't even say it's not making you a fake, because it IS. How is it not fake to get yourself altered to be anything but what you're supposed to be? You're being untrue to yourself and you've changed who you are supposed to be. I have a big nose and a square jawline, but I'd never in my life get surgery to change that. I think it's silly and shallow to change yourself into something you're not just so you'll blend into the rest of the crowd and look exactly like everyone else.
  3. I don't have anything against plastic surgery. If someone asked me if they think it's a good idea, I'd say no but if someone got it done, I wouldn't make fun of them.
  4. It is very shallow and superficial. You are denying what you were naturally given, not to mention mutilating your body. You may think you look better now, but I'm sure people thought you looked fine before and you probably look worse now. Believe me, there are times when I've felt so ugly that I wish I could just change my whole face but it would upset my family and friends and I'd probably regret it. I understand reconstructive surgery and things like that, but cosmetic surgery? I hate it. But... it's your choice.
  5. they want to look natural
  6. its because plastic surgery shows how vain your really are. it has nothing to do with the person getting it done.
  7. Yeah so if everyone thinks like you then everybody is gonna get plastic surgery and when they have kids their children will ask "Why do I look so different from you?" Hollywood is like a big pot of dye, making people in it not to be what they used to be. God's original creation will always be the most beautiful,I'd rather stay having my original nose than having to worry about my nose dropping when being punched or knocked against. And why would you ever feel good about being praised for being beautiful when you're artificial? Everyone is beautiful in their own ways, the standard of beauty are set by those stars you see in Hollywood which is def not true.
  8. Well it's normal the way they react specially if they mention MJ (because Cher looks drop dead gorgeous for her age!) 'cause they might be worried that you overdo stuff. See once you realized the marvels of surgery on your body, sometimes people can't stop. I mean it starts with a tummy tuck and botox for those little crow feet and it ends like freaking MJ or worse!!!. I don't think that you should go out and parading that you do this or that to yourself, that's a piece of information that should be kept well guarded in the box and mention it only if it's absolutely necessary.
  9. People don't like it because it's like the same thing as lying to them. You're not showing who you really are, and, if you don't tell them, they'll never know that you don't really look like that. To a lot of people, that's the just as decitful as pretending to be someone else. Another problem is this: people equate plastic surgery with excessive money spending. You didn't NEED a new nose. You're old one worked just fine, but you spent thousands of dollars to get a new one any way. This also makes you appear self-centered and vain. (As my grandmother once told me "If you have so much money that you don't know what to do with, instead of rearranging your face why don't you give it someone who needs it?") Point three: No matter what you say, people will always equate plastic surgery with rich snobs and washed out celebrities. Sorry but the mix of Doctor 90210 and Micheal Jackson have done irreparable damage to society's view of plastic surgery
  10. well sometimes it really depends on the surgery.reconstructive surgery is about the only good reason.people should be happy with the body form god gave them.
