Why are Americans obsessed with beauty?
Americans are very obsessed with looking good. Liposuction, facials, tanning beds, etc. So many Americans are wanting to look like super stars or beauty queens. Why is American culture like this?

- They an exceptionally ugly state that's why :PP
- So is the UK, Germany ect.....women in general no matter where there from obsessed about beauty.
- Whenever you don't understand popular culture, look for the financial motive. Does anyone make money from showing physical beauty as an ideal (which you'll never be able to attain)? How about movies, TV, magazines, cosmetics, fashion, etc. It's about money.
- Because it is human nature to seek beauty. If we all have a magic wand, I bet there would not be a single "ugly" person on this earth. I would therefore challenge your premise that only Americans are obsessed with physical appearance. US is a rich country, therefore her citizens have the financial means to partake some of the latest plastic surgery techniques. In parallel, China, with her growing middle class, is seeing a significant rise in the demand for plastic surgery (in particular nose and boob jobs). Don't be so harsh on the Americans. They suffered enough under Mr. Bush for 8 years already.
- People these days have too much self esteem.
- perfection is the american dream.
- How dare you single out Americans. America isn't the only country that is obsessed with being beautiful. What about the French?, and Parisians?
- One reason is that there are advantages to being attractive, for example, people who are attractive are more likely to get a job especially ones dealing with the public. Mass media and Hollywood probably has a lot to do with it too, beautiful people are cast as stars, and less attractive people are more apt to be cast as psychopaths, losers, lonely, outsiders, mentally ill, etc. I generally prefer movies with strong character development because character and personality are much more interesting than superficial looks, and prefer people who have a strong character and healthy sense of humor regardless of their looks, vain people bore me to tears.
- What you see is the hollywood culture. It doesn't apply to the rest of the country. Sure, it happens, but not nearly to the extent that you probably think.
